First Wednesday Market was yesterday.

And our marketing apparently did not get the message across.  We are stuck in a temporary spot in downtown Leavenworth until the pavilion is finished sometime next month.  So, our regulars did not know where to find us.  I finally made a sign that said Farmer's Market - TODAY!!!!

I walked up and down 4th Street (the main drag thru town) and announced to all that the market was HERE and to please come and buy our wonderful fresh stuff!  I know that I got at least 10 or 15 cars to pull into the parking lot, but it was an awful lot of work.  It was fun though.  I kept thinking of silly things to yell at people in the cars passing by.

In retrospect, I'm rather surprised I did it, but I was bored beyond belief just standing there with the other vendors, waiting around for 3 hours.  It was a lot more fun to be goofy.

Today, I'm tired.  I'm still run down from whatever it is I've been fighting off.  I did get my basil, oregano, thyme and some more peppers transplanted.  I was surprised to discover that a lot of Farmer's Market growers don't start their plants from seed.  They buy the plants from big plant places and just transplant them into the ground.

Hmmmm.  Wonder how much that costs!  I'm trying to do this without taking out any kind of loan, other than the money that John gave me last year to start it.  So far - FAIL! LOL.

But I have learned a lot.  For one, if I miss getting to the Market, I'm not going to sell anything.  So I am working hard to make all the Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon markets.

Oh, tomorrow, I'll be on KMBZ radio again.  It's been some months.  Get to talk about current events on the Morning News show with EJ and Ellen and I'm sure other Kansas City people.  It will be fun, and as always, I'll be a nervous wreck!
You can stream KMBZ if you want to listen - during the 8:00 am CDT hour.  http://www.kmbz.com

So, SWWBO took over advertising for the day, walking up and down the streets like a combination streetwalker/carnival barker pointing at people sitting in their cars, making sweeping gestures towards the assembled Farmers Marketers and bellowing out in stentorian tones, “You! Yes, you! Get yer ass over there and spend some money, dammit! It’s your patriotic duty to provide stimulus to the niche-farmer segment of the american economy!

I did not use the word “ass”

Kewl. I love farmer’s markets, and you just got yerself a GREAT marketing scheme. Your plants are grown from seed and not transplants. That could mean a price difference there, girl. Not to mention a bit closer to organic.

You so totally rock.

Note she doesn’t argue anything else…

Well, Beth, you are a hard worker. I read your bio and in addition to being a hard worker, you are a woman of integrity. I am keenly interested in your efforts. The Engineer and I are planting edible ornamentals because we have no idea where we might be in the next few years, but whoever we sell this place to will find fruit trees and bushes, along with a killer kitchen garden if we end up staying here until our mid-sixties.

I don’t know that we will ever get to some acreage due to our circumstances, but coming here and reading about your experiences is refreshing and comforting.

So noted..but that is what is refreshing about being married to someone with a great sense of humor.

We will be up that way come September…we would love to drop in and say hey, pitch some hay, feed some critters and help out with some chores. Whaddaya say?

Blech, wrote a nice comment & submitted wrong so it was eaten. Anyway, if it doesn’t show up I said…

LMAO! I would have loved to have seen your performance but I would have REALLY, REALLY loved to buy the fresh produce!

I think you’ve accomplished an awful lot in your first year farming and you’ve learned so much! Don’t get discouraged, it’ll get easier from here.

Feel better soon!

Cricket - oh, gosh, we would LOVE To have you come visit - bring your spinning wheel, you can play with some mohair!

Critters are always hungry, too. :)
