Wow. Now that I am actually doing some professional photo stuff, (in that I’m getting paid!), I bought a very high-quatlity
Canon Pixma Pro9000> It does a marvelous job, as it has 8 separate ink colors (which are really dyes).
I am also experimenting with different photo papers - Oh. My. God. (to quote Rachel Lucas). There is a huge, huge difference in the quality of the color from one type of paper to another.
For the truest colors, you gotta pay more for a professional quality paper.
I will need to test more brands, methinks, to decide what is best for what purpose! I will tell you, photo paper with a price of $15 or so for 100 pages will sorely disappoint you!
Though it might be okay for other applications - maybe calendars?

Beth, please let us know what the papers you are testing. I too, have a need for high quality paper.
BTW - the JC Penny Doghouse video that was listed in one of the comments on John’s blog is hilarious.
BBB
yeah, calendars could work. You could totally sell those, too.
I’m going to look at Irfanview tonight. Thanks for the tip!
Yer the better paper really does help.
Ink is so expensive. You know they make a loss on the printers and make a killing on ink.
I suspect Canon made some money on the printer I bought, but yes, the ink is where they make their big money!
One of the things I learned a while back is that the companies design their printers and ink to work with their paper. So, theoretically, Canon paper will work the best…. So what kind of camera are you using…?
Funny, I was just reading an article in Popular Photography (Feb 2009, pg 14) and the two papers that impressed me most were Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk ($14 for 10 sheets 8.5x11”), and the Innova FibaPrint White Semi-Matte ($41, 25 sheets of 8.5x11”). These would be for art print sales, not general printing.
The thing you’re going to want to do, no matter what paper you end up using, you’ll want to calibrate the printer and/or the print itself for this paper. You can usually download the profile for the paper from the manufacturer’s website.
Definitely, for art print sales, I want very high quality. For notecards, I want high quality, but cheap enough that the price of the cards can be competitive.
