Short post with a picture - have to get out and plant!

I thought this was a pepperomia plant, but now I'm not so sure - its flower does not look like pictures I've seen of them. Here it is - if anyone can tell me what it is, that would be nice. It is growing in my terrarium.

My Wardian Case

I think my first Wardian Case is mostly finished now. I am thinking about changing the waterfall into a fall plus river, but I'll have to make it from clay and fire and then glaze it, so it will be awhile before I make that change. I think the moss really makes it pretty, don't you?

My Wardian Case

Here is a picture of my Wardian Case with plants in it before I set it up:

Here it is - almost finished:

I am waiting for the moss I bought on eBay to arrive, so the ground is mostly potting soil right now.

Here it is without moss with the top on:

I still want to find some miniature things to put in it - not sure yet what I want.

I did leave the tiny little African Violets in their tiny little pots, and just sank them, pots and all, into the ground.

The little water fall was a Christmas gift from John's sister. It fits in pretty well, I think.

My favorite picture

I don't know if this is the best picture I've ever taken of a plant, but I like it the best - it's such an incredible water lily.

Update: Tell tells me that this is a Lotus - thank you, Tell - we don't get many of those around here in Kansas.

Outside my window

I have been under the weather since last night with tummy problems, so I've been taking it easy today. I have spent time playing Snood (which evil Ala told me about it - I'm so hooked on this dumb game!) and reading and drinking lots of water between running to the bathroom.

Anyway, our bedroom has three windows. The one closest to my side of the bed looks out onto the backyard, which we are trying to naturalize with ground covers, trees, etc. Anything to cut back on mowing the lawn!

There is a mulberry tree that took root and sprang up next to the house. This time of year, there are mulberries all over that tree, and many critters just love to eat those mulberries. Several branches are just inches from the window, and the cats have taken up residence so they can observe nature.

I glanced out the window earlier because Barnacle and Little Girl were getting pretty darn excited about something. It was a young oppossum - only about 12 inches long (including tail) and he was enjoying a snack of mulberries. The possum was about one foot from the window, so I could get a close up view of him. Unfortunately, I did not have the camera at the ready, so I didn't get a picture of him.

Honestly, this little guy was kinda cute. His tail wrapped around the branch as support when he ventured out on a thin limb. He was much prettier than all the dead possums I see on the road, and I didn't expect that at all.

We also have squirrels, many birds and chipmunks who climb on that tree eating mulberries. You can tell the birds have had a lot, because any bird poo around is red colored. Oh, gosh, I keep coming back to the topic of poop!

I have to run (literally) to the bathroom, I'll update later

It's tomato time!

Suddenly, many tomatoes are ripe and ripening. I cut open the first one on Monday. It was sweet and tasty beyond belief. There is nothing like a home grown tomato. Sliced it, sprinkled a bit of salt on it, and yummy.

Andy, our son, doesn't like tomatoes and won't taste one of the home grown ones. He says that his dad grew them once and he didn't like his dad's, so mine wouldn't be good either. I should have started growing them when he was little, so he could have enjoyed them before his taste buds got so picky!

Anyway, I looked at my little garden this morning and realized that I will have about 10 tomatoes ripen at the same time. I hate to think about doing this, but I may have to give some away because we won't be able to eat them all.

Cilantro

HoustonChronicle.com - Cilantro can kill dangerous bacteria

WASHINGTON -- Another reason to eat spicy foods: cilantro, an herb key to many cuisines and central to salsa, can kill food poisoning bacteria, researchers said Tuesday. U.S. and Mexican researchers said they had identified a compound in cilantro that kills harmful salmonella bacteria. They hope it can be developed into a safe food additive that could help prevent foodborne illness.

The cilantro in my garden is doing quite well. As soon as I have some tomatoes, I'll make my own salsa.

Garden Talk Time

Got Andy home from KSU yesterday, and he and John and I are working on improving his living environment by redoing his bedroom.

While we are busy doing that, I'd like to show off some of my plants that live outside on my deck.

I invite you to comment with links to your gardening achievements or underachievements (in my case!)

Or, I'll link with them!

Rachel Lucas has some tomatoes which are much farther along than mine.

Calliope has cute little baby corn.

Laurence Simon (late of Amish Tech Support, now of This Blog is Full of Crap)
has a very nice patio garden and he is able to grow peppers!

So here's to all my blogfriends who have gardens.
Plant pictures will be in the Extended Entry as I upload them

My tomato plants are finally blossoming:

Mmmmmm, strawberries and champagne!

I just harvested my first home-grown strawberries. 7 of them! Count them, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

John says that perhaps I need a second strawberry pot so we could have enough strawberries ripen at one time for us both to have some.

They were pretty good. I poured a little champagne over my 6 berries (John got the first one, I got the next 6 - I grew them afterall) and ate them all up.

Yum.
