I once swore I would never shoot an animal
But that was before I realized that there are animals which will kill my chickens and guineas or steal their eggs.
.... Or spray our dogs with a scent that can make you pass out - yes, skunks. I am going to have to start practicing with my Christmas gift from John. And then, I'm swear, I am going to start hunting skunks in the woods. They are vermin worse than mice - they are probably too big for the Red-Tailed Hawks to go for, and they often carry rabies.
Never in my life did I ever think that shooting a critter, other than a human threatening my family, would be an ok thing in my mind.
Never in my life were my dogs repeatedly skunked!!!
And no live traps, people! I want these skunks GONE!!!!!!!

Gone might be the one you get but vermin, if skunks are that, have a habit of out reproducing your efforts.
One of the easiest, most effective and I guess most nicey nice ways of vermin control is to deny them every resource they need to survive. So secure the chickens and possibly water and other food and shelter though I have no idea where they might live.

I don't believe in killing anything just for the sake of killing...but killing is a part of nature. We kill animals for food and we kill animals if need be to protect our domesticated animals. I will kill a cat..one of the few animals that does kill for the fun of it other than humans...and I will kill animals that destroy my property..I am a part of nature just as they are and the nature of all life is to protect itself.

I should have added that I will kill a feral cat that is after the birds around my feeder or a domestic cat that uses my flower beds for a litter box..I don't have anything in particular against the car per se..but they should be kept at home if they are a pet and destroyed if they are feral

Trias - okay, lessee, I'll install a huge well to suck the water table down far enough that the springs and creek dry up. Then, I'll drain the pond, and make all my neighbors do the same. Then, we'll roof it all over so that no rain touches the ground round here...
Good plan, I like it!

Never thought to see the day in which Sweet Ol' S4UBO would turn A
RIGHTEOUS KILLER.

I suspect you'll go hunting with the same guiding thought I take:
When I hunt it is my goal to make sure that I don't injure any animal. If I do it right my target will be down at least as quickly and cleanly as it would be in Nature. Hopefully quicker and cleaner - Nature tends to be rather messy.
Remember, you don't have to eliminate skunks from the area, just from your immediate surroundings. Any that live close enough to 'visit' but are smart enough to stay away - that's evolution in action, that is.

Shoot one, there'll be another. And another. Best bet is to find out what other methods there are to discourage unwanted animals from entering into your realm. Vector control might be able to help.
Having spent time in the country as a kid, I know all too well how pesky certain critters are. Even on the outskirts of the 'burbs, I've tangled with skunks and coyotes. Not fun. But I learned that there are a number of methods you can employ to discourage them from getting too close to chickens or plants. Try red fox urine (which you can find at farm supply stores). Some say mothballs work, but I haven't seen proof of it. Cayenne pepper? Motion sensitve bright lights can scare them off, too.
If nothing works, aim true.

I have lost many a chickens to the skunks. All they do is come in and rip their heads off for shits and giggles. I hate them; fire freely.

Hmmm... I know you don't like killing animals, but I think you've made the right decision. Like you said, they carry rabies... and you remember the shots Stacy had to get after killing the fox. Better to just shoot the sucker, and use a canvas or something to dispose of it.

I know I never comment, but the image of you trompsing thru the woods huntin skunk just floored me. I knew skunks were stinkers but vicious stinkers, who knew?
Keep are few gallons of tomato juice, (enough to fill tub)on hand before the hunt, incase one of em misfires.

Correction in case you misfire and it doesn't.
