Will you still love me when I'm 55? | Main | Getting closer to spring time!

I increased our critter count today

I got my 25 all pullet heavy breed chicks today. It's kind of a surprise package - these chicks are to be layers, and they are all different colors. All I know is that they are all the big chickens - the ones the hawks can't pick up and run off with!

Oh, and I got two ducklings, too. I figured, what the heck, ducks are nice birds.

And it appears that a handsome mallard duck and his lady have taken up residence in our large pond. They are pretty tough little birds, as I watched them chase off a pair of geese this afternoon. I much prefer the ducks to the geese - the geese just have parties that are way too big and messy, if you know what I mean.

I also put a down payment on 3 lovely Angora goats. Serafina is the name of the nanny goat, but her daughter, just a few weeks old, has no name. The third goat is a little kid - he will be our billy goat. The two girls are "colored" Angoras and the little boy goat is all white, nice coat.

When we go to get them, we will be able to transport Serafina in a large dog carrier and the other two in smaller dog carriers. Hope we can borrow them, as we don't really need them once we get the goats home.

I'll take baby chick and duckling pictures tomorrow. Darn, they are cute!

John will be happy that I built their brooder in the barn, so there will not be any mess in the garage! Well, from the chicks, anyway - lol!

I love goats; they are so absurd and weird-looking. My Mom and her sisters had a goat trained to draw a little cart, when they were kids. Then the depression got worse, and they had to sell the goat to the colored folks down the road, who ate him. Reckon the depression was even worse, for them.

You do realize that being a farm person might involve killing and eating some critters at some point?

M'self I'd have a hard time killin' any critter, unless it was like "Coming Right At Me!" I am pleased to be a carnivore, though, and congratulated my retired kitty on getting a yummy squab the other day.

Mebbe I'm just a wuss with a bad education.

Well, if do do any slaughtering, don't do anything Professor Grandin wouldn't do

JTG - we won't eat our critters. We will have loads of eggs to eat if it came down to needing food!

I want the goats for two reasons - their fiber, and their antics! I'll be getting some pictures of them in email, I'll be sure to post them.

Aww, duckies! You know I'm the duck lady, right? Have been since I was a kid. Yep, that's me.

And I actually know a little something about goats.

Sure, I've lived in the city most of my life, but I know things and have all sorts of experience people know nothin' about.

Remind me to tell you about the llamas.

Yay! Chickies and Duckies and Goats!

Oh yeah, on the antics. I can't keep a straight face when in the presence of goats. Besides, some say goats' milk is more nutricious for humans than cows' milk.

Umm, "nutritious." Dammit. And no, it's always been a point of honor with me never to use a spell-checker.

So you got your pullets and sort of a surprise package - would this be a pullet surprise?

*ducking*

Haven't been following that saga- are you having trouble with raptors? We used to tie streamers of brightly colored yarn over the chicken yard, kept chicken hawks away, I don't know why. Maybe they were afraid they'd get tangled in the yarn, I dunno. We sure had plenty of chickenhawks and they never bothered our chickens.

Foxes were another story.
