Ouch

Yesterday, I made my really yummy pasta sauce. It takes nearly all day to do it right, and I have some ingredients that need to be grated.

So, as I was grating my carrots, I looked down and saw that I had also grated my thumb.

Ouch.

I told John that I put a lot of myself into dinner! (Heh)

Although, no blood was in my sauce - just on my thumb, which still hurts and is still bandaged.

At least I did not bayonet myself!

Yikes! There must've been something in the air last night--I nearly cut off the tip of my finger with a chef's knife. No joke! Wrong knife for the task + lack of sleep + momentarily distracted = bringing knife down on the nail of my right index finger.

Fortunately, I knew it was happening before it even hit the finger and I started to pull away as I tried to stop the knife. So, it just cut at an angle through the nail and an 8th of an inch into the nail bed. Aches a bit this morning (typing mostly with 9 fingers), but it's already sealed itself...

Had I not stopped the downward force, the knife was perfectly capable of shortening my index finger about 1/3-inch. Good reminder to be careful with the kitchen utensils!

Even better reminder to keep your fingers curled while cutting. Just fold those fingertips back and let your first knuckles ride against the blade.

It not only keeps you from having to update your fingerprint cards, it makes sure you can feel where the blade is.

Learned it off of some cooking show long ago.

I mind the time that Julia Child was doing some cooking on the Dick Cavett Show and managed to get a bit of one of her thumbs into the sauce. Being an old-fashioned woman, she made light of it. I think they ate it, whatever it was, anyway.
