An aside

The term, "Breaking News", is now meaningless. After a couple of hours, it is no longer Breaking News.

And . . why is it that when there is one story with death and destruction, every other news item suddenly disappears from TV and radio? Shit happens, people. There have been bridges and buildings that have failed in the past. There is no sense in getting all upset about it unless you are personally affected.

And of course, I feel for those who have died, been injured or who have family and friends who have suffered, but many more people die each day in car accidents, but the news is not (thankfully) covered with in-depth stories of each and every victim.

I blame it all on cable tv and the 24 hour news cycle.

There is one other aspect that feeds into this. Our ability to got about our daily lives is founded on confidence in the world around us being stable. If the bridge one drives across daily could collapse at any minute, there is no certainty anymore.

Of course, the stability is the illusion, but it is our nature to feel comfortable with the status quo, isn't it?

Um, I meant "ability to go about our daily lives".

Need more caffeine.

I agree, SWWBO, although I do appreciate the relief from yet another story about the social and legal problems of some bimbo I couldn't care less about... That seeming to be the staple for "News" anymore.

I used to listen to a college radio station whose station identification would breathlessly announce that "When the news breaks, we give you all the little pieces."

Triticale - now *that's* a college radio station I could probably stomach.
