Oatmeal - good for the body

Last March, when I went in for my annual checkup, my cholesterol was high. Really high. It was about 290. And even though my HDL was very high (a good thing), it was not high enough to make up for the very high LDL.

The doctor wanted me to take zocor for it, but after reading all the warnings for the stuff, I thought I'd try eating oatmeal every day instead.

So I did. In fact, I now love the stuff - and I grew up hating it.

I went in for blood tests and followup stuff earlier this month. The doctor assumed my cholesterol would still be high, so he gave me a prescription for zocor. Rather than argue with him, I just didn't say anything.

I just looked at the results of my lipid tests and found that my cholesterol is down - way down - to 195. And my HDL is 69 (which is really, really good) and my triglycerides are normal, and my risk of cardiovascular disease from high cholesterol is now - low.

And the only thing I changed was eating oatmeal for breakfast. It doesn't seem to matter if it is instant or steel-cut or semi-instant - it worked.

So, my friends, develop a taste for Oatmeal. You will be healthier for it.

Outstanding.

And, as a chemist, I must say that you should try other means of dealing with things before ingesting drugs. We, who work in the labs, make these things to help those with true, unalievable in any other way needs. Zocor and the like should be used to help those who can't dodge the angina bullet any other way and not like tic-tacs. Of course, the hard way isn't as easy or as fun as just medicating it away.

I give you big props, SWWBO. Both for the drop in cholesterol and the intelligence employed in the path you took.

Drugs have their very beneficial uses but it's good you tried another way. It's even better it worked.

Just goes to show that oatmeal is everything that is being said about it. My cholesterol was also VERY high and I have been doing the same as you, oatmeal for breakfast every morning. I don't go in for another checkup until January some time. I will be interested to see the numbers of my cholesterol test.

I'm trying the same thing. I try to have one oatmeal meal a day, whether it's breakfast (occasionally), lunch (sometimes), or dinner (most often). Also, I'm taking cinnamon. That study was pretty convincing, and it's gotten my dad off of cholesterol meds altogether.

On a semi-related note, studies done with rats showed interesting results with live-culture yogurt as a treatment / preventative for arthritis. Read it in ScienceNews a couple of years ago and started the habit of having a cup of yogurt as an evening snack.

What's left of my right knee is a good test case. If it suddenly starts bothering me, odds are we've been 'busy' and haven't had our yogurt for a few days. If we're good about having it, odds are I'm not having any problems / pain with my knee.

Plus it's a nice snack.

Oh, and it has to be active-culture yogurt. In the study they tried all the variants - distilled water, water with 'dead' yogurt, water with just the bacteria, and water with active-culture yogurt. Just the yogurt culture in water showed signs of improvement but the active-culture yogurt was a clear winner.

Well, a heart attack doesn't have to be horrible and painful. Only usually. Just sayin'.

My cholesterol in Nov '05 was LDL 204 and HDL 35, My Dr wanted me to take a lipotor for it and I said no! I took to eatin' that oatmeal, 4 cap. of cinnamon, exercise and lower cholesterol foods, every day. Last time I had the cholesterol checked it was LDL 56 and HDL 66. YeeHaw.... (My Dr. was a Liberal pill-pushing young guy, you know, a salesmen!)
