Reutergate
In case you are as oblivious to the news as I have been for the last week, I just discovered that a photographer for Reuters has been playing with photoshop.
Beth at MVRWC and LindaSog at Something ... and Half of Something both have good background info on this new scam by Reuters.
Reuters has now admitted it is a photoshopped picture, and has an advisory statement admitting it was photoshopped and to remove the image.
Personally, I was struck by their advisory statement:
PICTURE KILL FOR LBN20 TRANSMITTED AT APPROXIMATELY 1408GMT ON AUGUST 5, 2006. PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE WAS IMPROPERLY USED ON THIS IMAGE. A CORRECTED VERSION WILL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW THIS ADVISORY. PLEASE REMOVE THE IMAGE FROM YOUR SYSTEMS. WE ARE SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. REUTERS LBN20 Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid on Beirut's suburbs August 5, 2006. Many buildings were flattened during the attack. REUTERS/Adnan Hajj (LEBANON) REUTERS NEWS PICTURESFirst of all it says: PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE WAS IMPROPERLY USED ON THIS IMAGE Does that mean that Reuters believes there is a proper way to edit news pictures with photo editing software? Secondly, it says - PLEASE REMOVE IMAGE FROM YOUR SYSTEMS I suppose that is to remove all evidence of their faking pics! And lastly, I can't wait to see the 'corrected picture' Wanna bet there will still be photoshopping in it? Only this time - properly used!

I believe that using PhotoShop and other similar software is allowed for cropping, color correction, etc., etc. They are not allowed however to move, add, or otherwise change pixels. I've been home sick the last few days, I've missed this story until this morning.
