Happy Birthday, Andy!

Today, our son, Andy Poland, turns 21. He is all grown up now! I am very proud of Andy and love him very much. He is coming home for a visit tomorrow. I've been thinking about baking him a cake or brownies or cookies. Probably brownies - he loves brownies!

His lovely girlfriend, Ashes, is giving him a birthday party tonight.

Anyway, Andy - if you get around to reading this - here's to you and a long and happy life!

Ha!

For some perverse reason, I scroll through my spam mail from time to time. This morning, I found this email - quite original, I think. Hee Hee Hee.

Dear Friend. I foresee your surprise upon receiving this letter from a total stranger. However be rest assured it comes with the best of intentions. I got your contact through a business associate with whom I had discussed my business intentions. Hence I have decided to involve you personally and discreetly with this business proposal of mutual benefit.

I am Dr mrs. janewilox sandy, Director of Operations. Until my recent promotion which made it mandatory for me to be posted to the UK, I was the Purchasing Manager of Zulu Animal and Agro-farming Ltd. which is a member of the Wythenshawe Community Farm, Manchester London.

During my tenure as the Purchasing Manager, I used to come to Malaysia for the purchase of some veterinary injections for use in our animal farms in south Africa and Zimbabwe. During this period I used to make some money for my self through over invoicing of the price of the product (that is, inflating the price more than what the product was actually been sold by the supplier). The top up was sometimes as high as 100% of the cost price. This was in corroboration and conniving with the supplier who made all receipts available to me to cover this up without it getting to my employers.

Since my promotion, a new Purchasing Manager has been appointed. His presence and subsequent meetings with the supplier in Malaysia will not only deny me of the gains associated with the purchase of this product, but my job will also be at stake as there is a possibility that he will be offered the actual price of this product. I cannot even strike a deal with him as he belongs to a religious sect that makes him declare himself as been born again. Based on his beliefs, such act constitute is a sin. It is because of this that I am soliciting for your assistance. I have removed the contact details of this very supplier as I do not want our new Purchasing Manager to meet him in person. This way, we can still make some money {for you and me} from every purchase made and at the same time, safeguard my job.

We are now in need of the injection and I have to give the new Purchasing Manager the contact information of the supplier in Malaysia. For this I am proposing to you to stand as the supplier. I will give you the contact of the main supplier whom you will meet and get this product from. You will then resell it to our new Purchasing Manager who will be coming down as soon as the product is in your position .This transaction is on a cash and carry basis so you don’t have to worry .After you have sold the product to my company , the profit will be split evenly between us 50% apiece.

Should this arrangement be acceptable to you, do contact me immediately as I am the one delaying his trip to Malaysia thereby buying time to conclude all necessary arrangements before his arrival. if you interested in doing this business , please do contact me as soon as possible so that we can discuss more in details through phone or emails below. Here is my e mail address[janewilox_sand@yahoo.com]

Kind Regards
Dr mrs.janewilox sand

What kind of man

Doesn't eat chocolate?
Apparently, John Kerry - maybe not eating chocolate is what puts him in a perpetually bad mood - or at least makes him look like he is in a bad mood!

Jill Caroll Released!

I'm very happy that Jill Caroll has been released unharmed - well, physically unharmed, who knows what kind of mental anguish she has gone thru.
Anyway, Fausta's blog has more!

Immigration

Immigration is the hot topic in the news of late. I can remember it being the hot topic some years ago, too. I believe it was during the Clinton years, but it may have been earlier. I remember that people were all upset about Hatians and Cubans coming here illegally - and that Clinton wanted to send them all back - oh, right - it was Clinton - remember the little Cuban kid they took at gunpoint from his family and gave to Castro? Yes, yes, lovely, wasn't that?

Anyway, there are thousands and thousands and thousands of people streaming across our Southern Border - and I am totally disgusted that Republicans (and the President) are bending over backwards to let them keep coming in.

I know, I know - there are all kinds of claims that immigrants only take jobs that no one else wants. Really? What about all the good-paying construction jobs that used to be available? Well, they are now not-so-good paying jobs taken by illegal aliens who will work for a lot less money than Americans. Contractors are cheating the government of tax money, cheating the illegal aliens of workman's compensation coverage, Social Security coverage, health coverage and believe me, they are not charging the consumer any less - they pocket the extra money. RIch people may think that illegals are taking jobs that US Citizens do not want - but what the hell do they know?

I have cleaned houses before - it was a good way to earn money when I was first divorced and it was a better way to network with other women - one of whom gave me a recommendation to an entry level job with Sprint - and which enabled me to end up doing the very technical job I do now.

I don't know what the solution is - one thing that comes to mind is to simply be American Imperialists and make Mexico part of the USA and the Mexican states can each become their own state.

I know - don't hit me! But, that would be a big step towards getting rid of their corrupted government, their state-owned oil company and bringing capitalism and education to the Latino people there.

I would much prefer that our habits rub off on Mexican people than their habits rub off on us. (I am referring to the habit of government corruption). And the natural resources of Mexico would be a wonderful addition to the USA.

OK - it is a dumb solution, but someone give me a better one.

Inflation!

Some months ago, I lost my car keys. For a long time, I was convinced they would show up somewhere, but I finally accepted the truth - I lost my car keys! And most likely threw them out!!

I have been borrowing John's keys since then, but we really did need another set, so I took the car in to have a new key and key fob made - all to the tune of 194 dollars - American.
Used to be, you could have a key cut for you for what - 2.00?
the key by itself was 29 dollars.

unbelievable!

Important Investment Information

Bwaahahahaha:

I never tire of email like this:

Hello,

I plead for your tolerance, of not having the pleasure of knowing your mindset before sending you this letter. I'm Mr. Joseph Addo; the operational head of Agricultural Development Loan Scheme of the Agricultural Development Bank, Accra, Ghana. The aforementioned scheme sees to the proper distribution of grants to our local farmers for better agricultural development in the country.

Early last year our government (Ghana) awarded a substantial amount of money to mechanize our local farm, which the scheme i head in my organization operates. And i was able to lodge the exact amount of $2.6M to an Escrow Call Account in our Bank without any beneficiary.

In a nutshell, i would need you to be the beneficiary of the stated account and stand claim of the money, and then transfer the money into any of your account outside Africa.

Please note importantly, that this is a very discreet project that must be kept confidential. And i would not be known to be part of the transfer, because i still head the scheme and i'm about to oversee another loan granting operation for the principal beneficiaries in the coming month.

So please email me immediately you received this letter on dd_jsph1@hotmail.com; but only when you are very interested.

Yours Truly,
Joseph Addo.

good!

It looks like the Kansas legislature is going to override our evil Democrat Governor's veto of the Concealed Carry law. The Kansas Senate overrode it last night. It looks like the House has enough votes to override it today. It's so about time we had the right to apply for a concealed carry license. Stupid governor, who I will not mention because she just creeps me out, thinks that we will have more gun crime - but as you all know, it's not the people with legal guns that cause the problem.

I'm such a dolt

I have been sooo busy working this week that I barely have time to do anything else! The last night, I was on-line with a client until midnight, fixing an issue that they didn't even notice for 6 months! Of course, they needed reports by today.

And then, the night before, I was working on another issue until 10:00 pm.

And I don't work nights! I usually start between 8 and 9 am. Except, of course, for this morning, I have a call in what - 2 minutes. And it will be a two or three hour call. Then I have to call a different client and then another one - these technical issues can be quite time consuming to correct - and I like to correct them by teaching the client how to do it so that hopefully they will not need me to fix it again.

Now, if only my clients would just keep the same people in that job for more than a year.

Bah.

Tornadoes a week or so ago, snow today

Gotta love the weather here in the Great Flyover States. There is snow coming down. A winter storm warning has been issued, great gnashing of teeth on the local TV and radio news- "Danger, danger, danger!!" The weather people all cry. " We are going to have . . . weather!!!"

Hell, we need the moisture, it has been a very dry winter for us here in Kansas. All the weather people apologize for the bad weather - as if they had anything at all to do with it!

My addiction

Ok. I admit it. I have an addiction. When I am the least bit stressed or sad or just bored, I reach for my laptop and WEBOGGLE!
And I can't play just one game - I have to play at least 10, and suddenly, 30 minutes is gone.

Sometimes, Weboggle is not there for some unknown reason, and I get palpitations and hyperventilate until it is back!

This morning is one of those days. Aside from losing Whiskey to Piddler Greens yesterday, I'm a little stressed. And then, John is leaving for South Korea today, so I'll be alone for a couple of weeks, making me more stressed. Well, not totally alone. I do have the 4 legged family members to keep me company.

Anyway, where the hell is Weboggle? I need to work out some issues.

UPDATE: It's back - I'm gonna go boggle until it's time to get in the car and transport John and his stuff to the airport.

Goodbye, Whiskey boy.

Our sweet old mutt, Whiskey, passed away this afternoon. He had been very ill the past few days, and he was on massive doses of antibiotics to try to kick an infection probably caused by cancer. Last night, he was on the bed with us, begging for bits of steak (we were very lazy and had dinner in bed, watched tv and played with the dogs and cats.

This morning, he actually went down the stairs to go out in the backyard - we had been walking him in the front because he was very tired and unable to very far - but this morning, he had to go out with his brothers, Houdini and Shadow.

Whiskey came to John before we were married. John lived in Oklahoma at the time, and found Whiskey as a pup, starving and scared. It was apparent that he had been dumped.

Whiskey got his name because he loved to lick toes. John's toes. Get it - he was a licker (liquor) therefore, Whiskey fit him perfectly.

He was not a pretty dog, but more lovable than any purebred dog could be. We loved him, and I hope my dad (a true dog lover) met him at the Pearly Gates and let's him lick his toes.

quick asides

I'm getting ready to check out of the hotel so I can get home earlier than planned due to approaching weather - in the meantime- my opinion follows:

1. If I was Jessica Simpson's mother, I'd be totally embarrassed. She dresses and behaves like a total slut. And then she refuses to meet President Bush.

2. Why do people keep inisting that the economy is it terrible shape? Just look at this Stock Market news.

3. Yale. Taliban. Okay - never mind Yale - we all know that the Ivy League School is nuts - why the hell is a terrorist in the US? Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi should be in Guantanamo - not Yale! Get him the hell out of the US.

Who the hell okayed a visa for this guy?

Sunday's storms

Grandma's House, Denise, made it through the tornadoes on Sunday. She was lucky, but many others were not.

If you are going to live in the midwest, it is a good idea to stay away from living in a mobile home park unless that park has a tornado shelter.

The thing about Kansas ..

Yesterday, the weather was great. Today, we were awakened by tornado sirens at about 8:00 am. Weather changes at lightning speed here in the Midwest. It is always quite interesting!

Today is my birthday. I'm another year older - 53. Wow. That sounds so old. But I don't feel like I'm 53. I think like I'm a lot younger, at least, I hope I do!

I am having a wonderful life. I am married to an absolutely wondrous man - brains, looks, sexy as all get out. My son is the best ever, and his girlfriend is just wonderful.

My job - well, my life really should not revolve around my job, but I like the money I earn and I love working with my clients.

I guess you could say that I'm mostly pretty happy - despite the ups and downs that just go with life.

I worry about the future - the craziness of those Islamicists who want us to all live under Sharia Law - the manic meaness of so many on the left, and too many on the right, too. I want people to understand what is really important. What our freedom really means. But all too many of them care about only their own, personal issue - hating people on the other side of the political spectrum.

I wonder if they will ever understand that which is threatening all of us now?

Oh, and there are still tornadoes going on in the area. What a day.

Oh, I got a helper!

As I was taking a break from my yardly duties, the doorbell rang. A young man with Ipod asked if he could rake my yard.

I jumped at the chance. I went out and helped for as long as I could, but Andre' was way ahead of me. I'm paying him $50 bucks to rake the leaves and put them in leaf bags, and it is worth every damn penny.

I hope he shows up from time to time when I am working in the yard. It's nice to have such a polite young boy working with me. And even nicer when I'm pooped and I can leave it up to him to finish the job.

YAY!!

Posted by Beth at 4:10 PM | Comments (4)

what a great, beautiful day!

The fun thing about living in Kansas is the weather. We can literally have 70 degree weather one day and snow the next. Today is one of those beautiful nearly spring days - 73 degrees, no humidity (unusual for us) and a half sunny sky.

I have about an acre of leaves just in the front yard that need to be disposed of. We raked and raked and raked last fall, but the Pin Oaks in the area drop leaves all winter long, and the leaves from everywhere in the neighborhood seem to be inexplicitly drawn to our front yard.

I need to rake, bag and clean up the leaves, the sticks, the trash that I will find under the leaves today. I also need to cut back some shrubs in front of the front porch that I just hate, they are deciduous, and die back in the winter. I'm going to pull them out and find some perennial flowering something or other for that space- but not those - yuch.

My Columbine is sprouting up already, as are a lot of my other perennial shade loving plants. We want to put in a hedge along the sidewalk this spring - we need a barrier of sorts to discourage people from coming into the yard to sit on my bench by the pond - also, since we are building a garden railway, we want to discourage kids from running thru the yard and breaking tracks, buildings, etc.

We have a lot of plans - not enough time, though. Or enough energy!

It's what????

***Cross posted at The Cotillion***
Apparently, according to the United Nations (known for saving women world-wide from horrors such as stoning, genital mutilation, etc., *not*) today is International Women's Day.

I have some problems with this day thing - I mean, over 1/2 of the population of the world doesn't even get a whole month?

Geeze, did you know that there is an All American Breakfast Month?
Those of us with innies just get a day?

Darn, I am insulted!!

I mean, really - we don't even get a 3 day weekend for International Women's Day - it's Wednesday, for God's sake!

Seriously, though - feminism itself has not been a bad thing. Unlike many of my fellow female conservative bloggers, I remember when women did not become veterinarians, doctors, lawyers, physisists, etc., except in very rare cases.

When I was in high school, the State of Missouri had a requirement that all girls had to have one year of Home Economics before they could graduate. My high school counselor had to file special papers for me so I could exchange an AP Biology class for Home Economics.
That was not really so long ago, either - I graduated from high school in 1971. At least it down't seem that long ago to me!

When I went to college, there were many, many more men went on to get a higher education than women. I attended a college that had previously been an all male college - ratio of men to women about 8 to 1. I was counseled to give up on my dream to be a veterinarian because women were rarely admitted to schools of veterinary medicine. I remember being told that schools didn't want to put a lot of time into educating women in a profession when those women would just quit as soon as they got married and had children.

I was the only woman at several companies I worked for in my 20s. I had to convince a couple of companies to hire me - they told me straight out that a woman couldn't handle the hours and hard work, and I excelled in those jobs - and those companies hired more women - so, yes, my younger women friends, I did make it a little easier for you.

When my mother was born, women could not vote. That was 1918.
My grandmother could not vote until 1920 - she would have been 28 years old.

When I went to college, most of the women I knew were going to college to get their MRS degree. And many of my high school class mates did exactly that.

Fortunately, these days, the great majority of businesses and professions are open to people no matter their gender. And many conservative women bloggers think that there is no sex discrimination in business these days.

I disagree. I know of companies who hire women based first on their looks, then on their smarts. I once worked for a chain of jewerly shops - the manager of the store I worked in thought it was okay to slap my ass as he walked behind me. I complained to the owners, and I was transferred to a lower volume store - basically a halving of my commission.

On the other hand, many liberal women want to take offense at any hint of acknowledgement by men - they are offended by guys offering to help them carry a heavy projector - they are even offended if other women mention that they have cramps or are having a hot flash (yes, I have personally experienced this).

I am squarely in the middle. Both conservatives and liberals are blind to a lot of little realities -

Liberal women of the US - we are women, we bear children and this is a valuable thing. Families do not keep us barefoot and in the kitchen. We can be stay at home moms and later start a career, and be successful. Too many babies are aborted - way too many.

Conservative women - we are women, but we don't have to be baby machines to fullfill ourselves or God's will. We can work outside the home and still be good moms and wives. And the liberal women are right - there is still discrimination in employment. I've seen it, I've experienced it - not just sexual harrassment, but discrimination.

Women as a whole are different from men as a whole, but if you take one woman and one man, they may be extremely similar to each other in personality, likes and dislikes. In fact, the man might be more 'feminine' and the woman more 'masculine'. But who cares?

I am going on a bit too long here, but women's day, schmomen's day.
If it is a politial day, fine - let's see the UN outlaw the genital mutilation of women - the imprisonment of Islamic women by husbands and fathers - the laws of Muslim countries where a man can divorce a wife at any time for any reason and keep her children and leave her nothing.

Okay, okay. Enough for now. I need to do some work!

Oh, and go read the posts of my friends from the Cotillion!

Meanwhile, I'm not blogging much at all. Work is stealing my life away from me! I never, ever catch up, and right now, it is really wearing on me. I'm very tired - of course, that could be because I am getting used to some new medications. Celebrex is incredible stuff - I didn't know how much my joints hurt until the hurt went away - wow, it's amazing stuff. I can even go up steps without pain. Only bad thing - so far, it makes me tired, but I hope to get over that.

Laundry, picking up clutter and cleaning are consuming this weekend.
Andy and Ashes (his darling girlfriend) came home yesterday, and I am very much enjoying their company. They are very cute together. Andy is truly smitten with Ashes, and she with him.

Well, I have to fold more clothes.

Restaurant review

Last night, I stumbled across a restaurant on my way back to the hotel. It looked like a little neighborhood joint from the outside, but oh, my - the food is to die for!

Next time I'm in Chicago, I'll be sure to take Mr. and Mrs. Glittering Eye there - in case they have not found it.

It is called Nonna Silva's (1400 Canfield in Park Ridge).

I had an incredible red snapper dish. Red Snapper on toasted ciabatta bread. Capers, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers in a wine sauce - wow, it was incredible. And th fish was cooked to perfection - moist, yummy.

They garnished the plate with sweet potato straws, which were also yummy!

If you are in the Chicago area, go there! You probably need reservations on a weekend.

An inauspicious start to the day

Damn. I can't find my hairbrush. How on earth did I lose my hairbrush?
And my sinuses are so fricking filled up that my tear ducts are clogged up.
And then the stupid little coffee maker here in the hotel room doesn't work.

Well, it can only get better.
