Carnival of the Recipes

Everyone, I have been terribly remiss at keeping up with the Carnival of the Recipes - my dear friend, Punctilious, has taken over management of the whole thing because of my crazy travel schedule.

To get your favorite recipe into the next carnival of the recipes, please blog your recipe, and then send the link to Recipe.carnival at gmail dot com by Saturday, noon.

Next week, the Carnival of the Recipes will feature Danish foods, recipes, etc., in honor of the fine country of Denmark - this is a chance to show the Danes that we support their refusal to bow before those who would limit free by sharing recipes that use Danish products.

Though I do not have any Danish recipes to offer (I'm not too keen on pickled herring), there is one good memory that I hold from my childhood.

In Old San Juan, there is a coffee shop called La Bombonera. It has been a San Juan establishment since the 1910's. As you walk in, you will notice an old espresso coffee contraption; with shiny kettles, copper piping, steam burbling everywhere, and projecting this wonderful aroma of freshly brewed Rican Mountain Coffee.

You sit down at the counter, and order a "Cortado con Mallorcas". A Cortado, for those Starbucks fiends, is similar to a Caffè Macchiato. A Mallorca (properly referred to as Pan de Mallorca, is a sweet curled pastry typical of the Island of Mallorca - a Spanish Island part of the Balearic Archipelagos in the Mediterranean), but I digress.

Upon taking the order, the waiter slices a Mallorca in two (like a bagel), takes a knife and digs into a Can of Genuine Danish Butter, similar to This One; slaps a dollop in between, and puts the Mallorca into a sandwich press. He then froths your Cortado, and by the time he's finished the Mallorca is ready, all toasted, with the powdered sugar all incorporated with the Danish Butter into a gooey mess.

Ah - Heaven!!!
