I had to post on this | Main | suggestions, anyone?

well, I have to post on this one, too
Okay. On one hand, people want the definition of 'family' to change - to be more inclusive of non-relatives, etc. On the other hand, cities like Manassas, Virginia want to define families as immediate family only when it comes to who can live in your home.
Seems the good people of Manassas are concerned that there are too many people living in homes. One family, who owns their own home, has a total of 7 people living in a five bedroom home. They rent out the downstairs to a couple and their nephew lives with them. They also happen to be Hispanic.
Again, they own their own home They are not renters, they are not illegal aliens, they are not living in a tenement. They own their own home and are now selling it because the law won't allow them to have more than one person in their immediate family living in the house - that they own, by the way - in case I did not mention that before.
I wonder if the City of Manassas, Virginia will be forcing college students who share a home to have only immediate family members living with them, or is this a rather blatant anti-Latino move on their part?
Then, of course, there is the question of home-ownership. My home is my castle and as long as I am not breaking occupancy laws as to the number of people per square foot, I should be able to allow whomever I want to live in my house.
Just another reason to be happy I don't live on the East Coast.
hat tip to the Corner.

Wow.
That city gov't is getting WAY out of hand.
I'm thinking their next recall election should include a horse, a rope, and a high branch :-/

As I've said before--the rules should be set when you move in, and if twenty-seven pets and a house full of relatives are OK on day one of your occupancy, then they should be OK from now on.
On the other hand, if you move into some fancy smancy neighborhood with an inch thick stack of protective covenants and a Neighborhood Nazi council charged with worring about the color of your mailbox and how tall your grass is mowed, live with that also.
Just don't change the rules on me in the middle of my life and existence in your (our) little piece of paradise.

Virgil -- I find I generally don't get along well with people who will *move into* some neighborhood with a stack of covenants. I find they are generally nosy, snoopy, meddlesome busybodies who also want to control how your workspace looks, are concerned with how old your car is, and display an inordinate interest in your reading habits.
Bleagh.
