Oh Crap
Oh, damn. I have dreaded this moment.
People from California are moving here. To the midwest - the Great Fly Over states that the Coasters love to mock.
GO AWAY! There is nothing to see here. Don't come here and raise housing prices.
Don't move here and tell us that we should live like you did on the Coasts.
I like it the way it is - the fewer people here the better!
But if you insist upon moving into the middle of the country, please, don't pay more for the house you want to buy than the asking price - that will screw up housing here for the rest of us.
From the New York Times:

Today, the most popular destinations for people moving from Los Angeles and San Francisco are less expensive parts of California, like Riverside and Sacramento. Las Vegas and Phoenix also remain near the top of the list, but Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville, Virginia Beach and Oklahoma City are becoming popular, according to Economy.com.In the Kansas City area, which straddles Missouri and Kansas, a small band of Californians are discovering the plentiful supply of spacious homes for prices that would not buy a shack back where they came from.
"They just walk in and go 'Wow, we can have space,' " said Sandy Tasker, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Overland Park, Kan.
According to I.R.S. data, the net population transfer to Missouri from California more than tripled, to about 2,200, from 2001 to 2004.
Guadalupe Osegueda, a 34-year-old ironworker who grew up in Los Angeles, recently chose Kansas City over the desert cities that have traditionally drawn Californians.
"I didn't want to go to Las Vegas or Arizona," said Mr. Osegueda, who lives with his fiancée and their two daughters. "Everyone is going there and the prices have gone up drastically."
The couple sold a three-bedroom house near Los Angeles for $450,000. They bought a four-bedroom house, with two kitchens and a swimming pool, for $185,000 in Gladstone, Mo., near Kansas City.

Argghhh! Oh, and... leave the silly laws and regulations that you're fleeing behind, too! Don't bring all the silly crap that made where you were unlivable with you!

Heeeeeeeeeeee! Be afraid. Soon, me and my clones will populate the MW as we flee California! Be afraid!
BEsides, I love the MW'ern work ethic. Mom was from Wisconsin and she instilled it in all of her kids.
There's only one silly law I miss from California--the smoking jihad. It's draconian and evil and unfair. But it sure is nice when you're a non-smoker.
But, I don't think you have to worry too much about the silly law people comming here. They're moving to places like Oregon and Washington(so Barb will have to force the weirdos to pry her weaponry from her cold dead hands).

I'm thinking that the people moving east aren't the ones we have to worry about. We've had a few decades of brain drain, so a few smart folks who want a little more space can't be all bad.
Plus, they'll really like the fact that we say please and thank you, and that we don't gang-rush the jetway when the gate attendant starts the boarding process.

I had a guy from California come into the spa, where I work, and during our conversation I asked if he was here on vacation. He told me he was on the island looking for property to buy. I just couldn't resist saying " gosh i'm sorry, there is no land left for sale, it has all been sold" (of course I said this with a smile and made it sound like a joke!)I bet he was thinking I was a smart ass.
The bumper sticker which reads, Washington is full, Go home.
sums it all up.

oh, Keewee - you work at a spa? hope you get lots of free massages!
Posted by: Beth at November 8, 2005 8:23 AM
Yes, I do, and what's more, when the therapists need to practise a new ritual, guess who's first to volunteer to be a 'body' for them to practise on. Yep, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it!

Living in the KC area I can but hope we get a 'real' winter this year. I suppose if they kalifornicate the place up too much I can always move back up to South Dakota. No *way* they'll make it past Christmas there!

Ry is right - the folks from the MW hate moving here because of the property prices, but from SoCal the difference is pretty even, or favorable. That's all I need here, a three week waiting period to buy a handgun.
Regs-wise, look at what Washington has already done to pop Boeing out of the state. Then note that the largest employer in the state is ... the State .. ARGGHHH!

It's not my fault Barb!
Quit the Californian hatin'. We just don't know no better having been raised in social experiment.

"Less expensive places live Sacramento"
Less expensive? LESS expensive?
Beth, save your ire. Those of us who are unable to afford a freakin' CONDO because of Bay Area commuters ($200,000 minimum and climbing at $50,000 a year) have dibs.
Slow-roating dibs.

"slow-roasting."

My son is currently house-hunting in Kansas City, but he's looking at city auction stuff on the south side of town near the railroads. It's going to be a few years before the overflyers will pay too much to buy him out.
