silly singing
Petey, my little Paint Horse, has Equine Uveitis. That means his left eye has gone blind.
As those of you with horses know, we are trained to do everything from the left side of the horse, so mounting or getting off of Petey can be a bit ... exciting.
I have found, through trial and error, that singing nonsense songs to Petey calms him quite a bit. When I ride him, I sing to him - silly stuff - like "look at the pretty butterfly, Petey, look at the pretty bug" - mostly, I sing about where we are, I guess. Some people may think I'm nuts, but Petey never gets excited and bucks if I'm singing to him.
I was at the barn yesterday, to check his foot (he stepped on a nail last week and John pulled it from his frog) and play with him a bit and to get him to soak his foot in a bucket of epsom salts and water. I found that singing to him calmed him enough to keep his foot in the bucket for a good soak.
Of course, everyone in the barn thinks I'm crazy now, I guess.
When I was a little girl, I used to make up songs and sing them all the time - especially when walking through the lovely woods behind our house.
When Andy was little, I used to sing in an opera-like manner about silly stuff - like - I'm making dinner, what do you want? - only with one made up tune or another.
I guess I sing to the dogs and cats, too.
I have no idea what the point of this is - perhaps a confession that I'm a bit nutty, I suppose!

I sing to my kitty. I think he likes it.

I sing to my puppies too.
They don't run away, so I'm guessing they don't mind it.

I do that and have always done that with my kids!!! Anyone else in the house, including my husband, nothing. I refuse to sing in front of adults... but my boys... holy crap they must think I'm insane. I sang all through making their dinners, while we were in the car, getting them to bed... and really really stupid stuff. I mean... dumb.

I sing all the time- in the shower, riding the scoot, flying the plane- walking down the halls at work... I like song.
People say I should be on the radio...
...so they can change the station.
Hah! But I enjoy it, so they can just zark off.

I do too, Boq --- drives the Hubster nutty! For some reason, he'd rather listen to the artist on the CD than me -- go figger!

I can't carry a tune which drives everyone around me crazy. But I hum pretty good.

To my critters, I've always spoken and sung to them in Spanish. So far, I haven't found a gringo puppy who hasn't understood my rican patois.
What's that old yarn... Music calms the savage beast. Not surprisingly, our bird loooves to listen to music and gets exstatic when we sing to him. So much so, that even when traveling to places like Santiago or Buenos Aires, my bride has me singing to our bird over the receiver. He has a tight bond with my bride, and does this special Mommy Dance, when she sings to him.
Finaly, The Spanish Emperor Charles V, had a saying:
To my horses, I speak in German, (lang. of Commands)
To the ladies, I speak in Italian, (lang. of love)
To men, I speak in French, (used to be the int'l. business lang.)
And to God, I speak in Spanish (his personal language).
