First picture with new toy

This is Houdini -

This picture was taken with a flash at close range - I was amazed that there was absolutely no red eye!

What a cutie!

You did get a very slight green-eye, though, but it looks like it's not directly from the flash. Judging by the slight blurring of the nose, I'd say your camera was close enough so that the retro-reflection from the retina, which ideally would return directly to the flash unit, missed your lens.

BTW, dogs with black coats usually have a green membrane (the tapetum) behind the retina, coloring the reflection. Puppies usually show blue eye. The layer enhances night vision by reflecting any light that didn't get absorbed by the retina, giving the retina a second chance at it. Humans don't have the membrane, so our eyes always look red.

Thanks for the comment, I hope to take more pictures of our critters today. I am no expert on photography, that's for sure! And it is really neat learning something new - that eye membrane info - I had no idea!
