House work

John and I have been sleeping on a waterbed since we met. I have been thinking it's high time we got rid of it and got a nice, real bed. It takes me years to make a decision like that, but I finally decided a few weeks ago that I want a new bed. The waterbed's heater broke some months ago, and as a result, I have been sleeping on top of a pile of blankets to keep from freezing, while John, of course, loved the cold and slept under the blankets.

Not conducive to snuggling and stuff, if you get my drift.

Last weekend, I decided that this weekend we would get a new bed. But then yesterday, I thought I'd check out our local furniture store to see what they had.

The nice thing about a local store is that they will deliver the same day.

Anyway, I drained the waterbed. The mattress, box springs and frame were delivered. After going out to dinner and visiting Bed Bath and Beyond for proper sheets and bedding, and much fussing about taking the old waterbed apart, we have a new bed.

When did they make beds so high? When I sit on the side, my feet don't even touch the ground!

LOL! I envy you. You must feel like the princess, in "The Princess and the Pea."

Without the pea, obviously :-)

Uhhh, a little late NOW, but didja take a look at the newest kinds of waterbeds? The ones which have a foam support integral to the mattress, so that you don't need a frame... and you can buy real sheets, but still have a waterbed sleep experience?

See, you shoulda asked your blog-buds!!! *giggle*

Seriously - that's what we bought about 10 years ago, and we looked at the newest ones a few weeks ago (when we had a leak, and weren't sure if we would be able to repair it). They new ones are kewl - in a king size you can even get dual bladders, so that there is NO effect when one person gets out of bed.

ANYHOW - to answer your question - I first started to see the big high mattresses with the pillow-tops about 6-7 years ago.

BTW - in the interest of disclosure, I have owned a waterbed since *gulp* 1981 -- 24 years now. I've upgraded twice, from the original plain water-mattress, to the 'Waveless' kind which still needed a frame, to the current model which has an integral support in the mattress. When I travel (as I will be next week - to Dallas), I HATE hotel beds ... all I want is to get home to my waterbed.

Barb,

I used to *sell* waterbeds. I've had one since about '79. I had waveless and I am familiar with the frameless waterbeds, but I have been sleeping in some great beds at some of the nice hotels I get to go to, and I love the poofy tops and the ease of getting in and out of them!

Out here in the middle of the country, I can't even buy waterbed conditioner anymore.

What you don't want is beds with mirrors over. You spend the whole time wondering if they will fall down and kill you!

Heh. *Stuff* huh?

Sally - you've got the wrong attitude, woman!

We traded our waterbed for a cheapo mattress ages ago 'cause the beams in the new house wouldn't support the weight. After a bajillion nights and a really bad back I finally convinced Mr-but-I-like-the-comfy-dip-in-the-middle-and-the-feel-of-all-the-extra-slats to buy a new one by selling the old bed and convincing the purchasers to take the mattress for free. (Saved me 20 bucks at the landfill.) Now we have one of those number beds and I LOVE it. Even Mr-lumpy-suits-me-fine has decided it is a good thing. Perhaps the really high tc sheets I bought to go with it help.

No mirrors. Wouldn't want them falling and popping the air bag now would we.

All those bogus excuses about the mirrors!

Beth,
I understand the feet not touching issue. Take one antique iron bed, one tall box spring and new mattress, add one padded stool to get in and out of bed. Love the height!

Mattresses have gotten a lot higher. We just got a new set recently for our already a bit higher than normal antique bed. The set was so impossibly high that we sent back the box spring and got a slim one that was half the height of the normal box. It helped a lot.
