Lousy Appliances

I truly love gadgets and appliances of all kinds. When I see something that looks promising, I buy it.

Well, some don't work out - don't waste your money on them!

The Black and Decker Gizmo cordless can opener is just awful. It does not have the power to open anything after about 2 months - even if it is in the charger. Waste of money!

Henckles can opener --best thing I ever bought. We went through all the electrics and they never really worked that well --this is a manual and it costs as much as an electric, but I have had it for eight years and it never falters and never leaves a snag!
...wow, I sound like such a geek, but I love gadgets too and when I find a good product I have to share the news! haha...

I'm glad I read this post! I was considering getting a Gizmo, now I'll look for something else. Thanks!

As strange as it sounds, I too have been searching for a new can opener and am glad I read this! Thanks for the heads up!

My OXO is almost dead, but I still love manual openers... I just want something that's easy and will take the lid off without sharp edges... ;)

Thanks for the tip! I was considering getting one because of the large cans I sometimes have to open make a stand-up electric a bat-rastard to operate. I think I'll spend the money on a high-quality manual instead.

After sharpening it every couple of years with a Dremel tool, I finally gave up on my old P-38. I splurged, spent the sixty nin cents, and put a new one on my key ring.

Oh, Triticale - John has a p-38 and he can open cans with it, but I have some arthritis in my hands and it hurts to use it!

I have a Gizmo and I love it. I've had it for over a year now with no problems. Maybe you have a bad one (or I have a good one?). I noticed that if it's not on the charger just right, it obviously doesn't work after awhile.

Beth,

Don't have an electric can opener, but Ni-Cad battery packs frequently develop a 'memory' when they are used about the same amount every time and don't fully recharge when plugged back into the charger. Discharge it totally (overnight) then recharge it. Should "cure" the problem for a few months.

If you're gadget-y, you should check out Popgadget, which always makes me buy stuff. Techie Diva is good too. I prefer Popgadget because the site's owner is a friend of mine, and since she's a quasi-germaphobe (you can tell by some of her posts) and I'm a microbiologist, we're kind of like a bizarre version of The Odd Couple. I think we need a sitcom.
