New toys for home office

Since I will be working at home when I'm not traveling, I decided to buy a copier/fax/printer/scanner. It is pretty darn cool, and it is just amazing what you can get for under $200.

I really like it so far. I am setting it up as a network printer to make it easy to use with our wireless laptops. I think I will have to figure out the best way to hook it up as a fax machine - I only need a fax occassionally, and then only when I am faxing something to someone else, so perhaps I'll just hook up the phone line when I do need that function. Just think back ten years - who would have thought then that you can get now for a low price something that does so much?

More on Identity Theft

Well, it seems that an Illinois Day Care Center used my Social Security number to get a long distance account. My name is not on it anywhere, but my SSN is, so the collection agency thinks I'm the culprit. I explained to them that I have never lived in Illinois, never had a day care center and have never given anyone permission to use my SSN for anything ever.

I have to send them a letter with that info on it, and while I'm at it, I'm sending the info to the Illinois Attorney General and the Kansas Attorney General.

This really pisses me off!

Crazy Frog thing

I've been trying desperately to catch up with reading my favorite blogs this weekend. I should be doing all kinds of other stuff, but this is more fun and less work.

The Cheese Mistress, LeeAnn, has discovered the Crazy Frog video. When I was in London last week, this thing was on the TV all the time - only they blacked out the little frog peepee. All the Brits I worked with called it the 'damned annoying frog'.

Damn

Apparently I have been a victim of Identity Theft - back in 1992 - and I just find out now?

Good lord!

I'll let you know what happens.

Go read Steve's thoughts on Delilah's Blog Box. He actually searched for her real blog, which led him to some other DU blogs and their lovely comments on Catholicism, etc.

memememememememem

Barb tagged me while I was in London, so I'm a little late in catching up.
Here is my data on the movie - blog poll thingie that's going around.

Total number of films I own on DVD/video: John was very kind and counted everything in our bedroom - Andy counted what was in the living room.
I may be off by a few, but we have 367 videos and 69 DVDs. Yes. We have a lot. We likes our movies in this household, we do!

The last film I bought: Well, the last DVD I bought was a yoga thing, so let's count the last one John bought - it's more fun! Team America.

The last film I watched: Well, F**K Yeah! Team America! Puppet Sex! whoohoo!

Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me (in no particular order): Evolution is one we watch a lot. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is wonderfully funny. I love all three of the Lord of the Rings movies. Princess Bride is definitely a favorite. And I also really like the First Season of CSI.

Next players Oh, golly, this will take some time - has anyone *not* done this yet? Oh, wait, John should do this!
I need two more!

Fact checking the DU "Blog Box"

I don't know whether to be amused, flattered or annoyed by the link from something called "Blog Box" at Democratic Underground. The writer doesn't really read very well, in my opinion. I guess I'll just fact check her comments that are related to me and my fellow Nekkid (Not Naked) Bloggers:

Naked Bloggers

Last year, everyone (including yours truly) was dumping on Glenn Reynolds and his army of pajama bloggers. This year, I'm hearing more and more about naked bloggers. Disclaimer: I'm not a naked blogger (not that there's anything wrong with it).

I started the Bloggin' Nekkid, Nekkid Bloggers thing nearly two years ago - in 1993, (way before Pajama Punditry became fashionable)so if Delilah thinks that Nekkid Bloggin' is new, she is sadly mistaken. John and I have been bloggin' Nekkid for a long time now.

And we are not "Naked Bloggers", we are "Nekkid Bloggers".

I'm not joking about the existence of naked bloggers among us. Not only is there a whole slew of naked bloggers out there, they have a Naked Bloggers Webring. They even held a contest to find the best Naked Bloggers' logo. And the winner is...

It is a Nekkid Bloggers webring. It is not a Naked Bloggers Webring.

And I must say, Eric created a great logo for the Congress of Nekkid Bloggers!

Seriously weird: the fact that most self-proclaimed naked bloggers are (are you ready?) right-wingers - not the "I love my body no matter what it looks like" liberals I was expecting to find blogging nekkid.

The one who appears to be the biggest crack in the buttcheeky movement, She Who Must Be Obeyed, calls Howard Dean "Dizzy"

Oh, for God's Sake! I wrote, "If it wasn't for the fact that Dizzy Dean was a friend of my dad's, I would start calling How-weird Dean - Dizzy."
I don't call him Dizzy Dean - I call him How-Weird Dean!!

... and links repeatedly to Huffington's Toast, a blog who's creator must secretly yearn to write for the Onion - but only excels at putting the "un" in unfunny.

6) Geeze, those folks at the DU have no sense of humour. None whatsoever. Steve does a great job of satirizing
Arrianna Huffington's silly blog.

Also unfunny (I mean, seriously unfunny in an "Armageddon would be fun" kind of way) is naked military blogger, The Gun Line, who thinks he's the new Dennis Miller:

1) Vincente Fox: Take your comments and shove 'em! Your glad-handing of the American "leadership" doesn't do a damned thing for me, pal. Clean up that rats' nest you call a country...

2) Newsweek: Thanks a hell of a lot, you lying bastards! How many American servicemen, and our allies have you put in mortal peril so you could sell a few more magazines?

3) Unappreciative spouses: The folks who sweated bullets trying to manage crappy situations under fire, in bad situations, far from home, who have shed too much blood, lost too many buddies, and now no longer can immerse themselves in the community that they have earned membership in The Brotherhood; why don't you cut them some slack? A little support wouldn't be amiss, 'lest they decide that you just aren't worth the crap sandwich you're dishing out, and DROPS YOU LIKE A HOT ROCK! There are PLENTY of folks who would give greatly to have such a stalwart life companion, so don't think that you're position is too bloody secure! You CAN be replaced! (No permalink for this post; Scroll down to May 16, 2005)

I don't care if this guy's buttcheeks are stuck to a chair seat or not, The Gun Line's idea of a "stalwart life companion" who can discard a "disrespectful" spouse so easily doesn't inspire confidence in his definition of "The Brotherhood," does it?

Apparently Delilah does not understand how to link. The link to the post she quotes is here.

As to her concern about discarding a spouse who is not living up to her/his end of the deal while the other is fighting for our Country - if someone cheats on a soldier while he is at war, that's certainly a fair reason to dump the cheating spouse.

Fortunately, not all naked bloggers are scary freepazoids. Cyn City is savvy enough to distinguish between George Galloway's testimony and the "hot air generated by many of our representatives." Random Fate asks, "How do you know when things are really spinning out of control and not just 'politics as usual?'" Random Fate links to right-wing (possibly naked) blogger Balloon Juice for a potential answer and finds that Republicans aren't happy little BushCo-ites anymore.

I didn't quite follow her line of reasoning here. Jack is a friend of mine and John's (Oh, my, can you imagine how the DU would freak out if she checked out John's blog - that would be hilarious). Jack links to lots of us from time to time, as we link to him.

There are many more naked bloggers doing their thing; however, visions of virtual skin alone will not lure me back to most of their sites for a second, er, peep. I prefer bloggers whose wit, intelligence, and humor leave a decidedly liberal bite mark. And that's the naked truth, naked bloggers!

Well, goodness, isn't she clever - using an oxymoron like that - I mean, really - I have met some intelligent liberals, but very few with a sense of wit or humour!

UPDATE!! As Roger so rightly pointed out - She got the name of my blog wrong!!
I have no idea how I missed that one! Thanks, Roger!!
And once again, Miss Delilah - we are NEKKID BLOGGERS!!!!

On traveling and dining alone

Jeff asked in a comment if I dine alone when I'm traveling, or if I stay in the hotel.

I go to restaurants. I ask the people I'm working with which restaurant they recommend, and I'll try it. I try to go to at least one pricey and wonderful restaurant each trip (unfortunately, in London, there are plenty of pricey restaurants, but I was unable to find a wonderful one!).

I often bring a book to read, and that seems to be a single to the host or hostess that I will be dining alone. I also try to get to the restaurant a bit before they start getting busy, so they won't have the excuse of many people waiting.

I have never had a restaurant not accommodate me. Almost all of them have a first come - first serve rule, no matter the size of the party.

In Baltimore, at one of the pricey seafood restaurants close to the The Inner Harbor, they suggested that I sit at the bar. I told them that I would prefer to sit in the restaurant since I don't smoke, and that I was on business, and their restaurant had been recommended to me, so wouldn't they please seat me with the diners as opposed to the drinkers.

They did.

I think mentioning that the restaurant came highly recommended really helps.

er, sorry folks

I've been too busy with work stuff to post. With any luck, that will quickly change as I have finally acclimated myself to the 6 hour time change.

This morning I feel normal (well, as normal as I ever feel) for the first time since I arrived on Sunday morning. I am not all fuzzy headed and aside from the absolutely awful British TV, I am quite enjoying my stay here in London.

I am staying at the Hilton London Paddington - a lovely hotel that used to be called the Great Western Royal.

It had fallen onto hard times until it was bought and refurbished by the Bhatia family. And it is a truly gorgeous hotel. The rooms are huge and beautifully decorated (very Art Deco). The Executive Lounge is very pretty - lots of places to relax and free wine, booze and beer and food for those of us fortunate enough to have a key.

I need to get working now, so I can play later (:

London

Well, after watching the BBC News this morning, I can understand why everyone hates the USA - the BBC blames us for everything under the sun - from flooding in Bangladesh to the price of oil.

My hotel is gorgeous - I got upgraded to an 'executive' room because I'm a Hilton Gold member (after this trip, I'll be 'diamond') - and it is huge and lovely.

I walked a couple of miles yesterday to get a sense of the neighborhood. Spent a cozy hour in a local pub, and wandered through some very interesting little shops.

Broadband is very expensive here - 15 Pounds for 24 hours - pretty pricey at the current exchange rate!

Pictures tomorrow!

OhmiGod! I am so not ready for this trip!

Arrggghhh!!!!!! I am not ready, I am not ready, I am not ready!
I have not packed one thing - my backpack for my laptop broke - I have not dressed yet!
I have got to get moving, go to Walmart and buy some panty hose - oh my - I have not polished my toenails yet - ugh.
Have to wash hair - do I bring my hair dryer? Surely the Hilton will have hairdryers?

Gotta run - I'll let you know tomorrow how the flight went!

Oh, Cool!

As you know, I am leaving for London on Saturday. I just checked the hotel's website and found that the hotel is very close to some nifty places:

Marble Arch 1 MI
Oxford Street 1 MI
Hyde Park 1 MI
Madame Tussaud's 1 MI
Planetarium 1 MI
Kensington Gardens 0.6 MI
Portobello Market 1 MI
London Eye 1.5 MI
Piccadilly Circus 1.5 MI
Buckingham Palace 1 MI
Tower of London 5 MI

I purchased a very small digital Olympus Camedia for the trip - don't want to lug around the Canon Rebel SLR Digital - and this little camera will fit in my small purse - so I hope it takes decent pictures - I have noticed that because there is no view-finder, I tend to be a little shaky when I take a picture - it's one of those with the display on the back - has anyone figured out a way to steady cameras like this?

If any of our English blogfriends are close to London, let me know and we can have a drink at a pub!

I do wish we could have found a ticket cheap enough to bring John along. But I will be working for 3 of the days - and I'll have 2 days and evenings to sitesee.

Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced eating places in that part of town?

Dean is Dangerous - or just stupid!

Dean jeers DeLay on eve of Valley trip.

If it wasn't for the fact that Dizzy Dean was a friend of my dad's, I would start calling How-weird Dean - Dizzy.

Dean, head of the Democrats, said this today:

There's corruption at the highest level of the Republican Party, and they're going to have to face up to that one of these days, because the law is closing in on Tom DeLay," Dean said in a telephone interview before heading to an appearance today in Phoenix

He has already judged a man who has not even been indicted - hardly an example of believing in innocent until proven guilty -

In case you have forgotten, How-weird Dean was defending Osama Bin Laden's right to be innocent until proven guilty during his (happily) failed campaign last year:

"I've resisted pronouncing a sentence before guilt is found," Dean said during the 2004 Democratic primary campaign. "I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best not to, in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials."

The man is definitely not fit to run anything, much less a major political party in the USA!

Welcome, DUers - please check out the rest of my blog - especially this post.

Lousy Appliances

I truly love gadgets and appliances of all kinds. When I see something that looks promising, I buy it.

Well, some don't work out - don't waste your money on them!

The Black and Decker Gizmo cordless can opener is just awful. It does not have the power to open anything after about 2 months - even if it is in the charger. Waste of money!

Too Little, Too Late

So Newsweek admits it was wrong and retracts the story of a Koran being flushed down a toilet.

Can they bring back the lives of those killed because they jumped on a story that would hurt the Bush Administration, without any proof whatsoever? What's to stop the media from simply making stuff up to prove their agenda? And yes, I am now convinced that the news organizations in this country have an agenda. They believe they know what is best for the country, and their reporting shows that the media, by and large, is very pro-UN and thinks an all world government is the way to go.

Of course, if the UN ran the world, just how much news reporting would they allow - seeing as the UN is made up of a ton of third world countries run by dictators.

I have never been a fan of Newsweek or Time - once upon a time I liked US News and World Report, but they have their biases too.

100 Greatest Americans

Professor Bainbridge has discovered the Discovery Channel's new show where the audience can vote for greatest American out of 100 people listed.

Sounds okay, but the list includes such 'great Americans' as Ellen Degeneres - who is certainly a great comedienne, and Tiger Woods - a great golfer, and Joseph Smith - the founder of the Mormon Faith -- all interesting folks, but great Americans? I don't think so!

The majority of the other 'great Americans' Discovery Channel would have us vote on are celebrities, living celebrities.

Go read the Prof's post - it is very good.

By the way, I agree with the Professor's inclusion of Julia Childs on his list of Great Americans.

Something is wrong here

What kind of leader *wants* his people to leave his country and become citizens of another?

If he was a successful leader, perhaps Mexicans would not be sneaking into our country in such huge numbers.

And, I think he is a racist, too.

Vincente Fox - keep your nose out of our business!

Gandalf The Grey

Gandalf is our Persian kitty. He is a very attractive cat, except for his always somewhat grumpy looking expression.

Gandalf has lots of hair.

Lots. of. hair.

It is long, very fine, fluffy, easily tangled hair.

Here is Gandalf before grooming:

He looks pissed just seeing me with a seam ripper, scissors and brush in hand.

It matts up very quickly and he needs constant grooming. I have found that a seam ripper is the best and most painless way to get the matts out, but it is a tedious chore, and Gandalf can only take so much of my grooming before he turns and walks away, with a small hiss and grumpy growl.

He really loves his brush, though. It's one of those slicker brushes with lots of little wire teeth. The only problem with that is he really likes me to brush under his chin, so as I try to brush his back or rump or tail, he is constantly turning around, trying to get the brush under his chin.

I am going to be working on grooming Gandalf today - I'll post a picture of spiffed up Gandalf later on.

Sure, I can be a bitch, but ...

Brute
You are 14% Rational, 42% Extroverted, 57% Brutal, and 71% Arrogant.
You are the Brute! You are introverted, arrogant, brutal, and more intuitive than rational. Like a big, dumb animal, you are driven by your emotions more than your reason, and as a result of the fact that you care very little for the feelings of others, you tend to be rather selfish. Because of your selfishness, you also tend to be a bit arrogant, seeing yourself as big or strong or smart or always correct. This makes you a stubborn, irrational, emotion-driven brute. King Kong best represents the gorilla-version of your personality. Emotional, introverted (King Kong was isolated on his own island, after all), brutal, and arrogant (proud to be the largest ape on Earth!), Kong would probably get along very well with you, seeing as how you share many of the same traits. Aside from, you know, all the fur. So your personality defect is simply that you resemble King Kong to a very high degree. Which probably isn't a good thing, you big brute!

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more BRUTAL than gentle.

4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Hand-Raiser.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Class Clown, the Schoolyard Bully, and the Sociopath.

*

*

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42% Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well. Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 12% on Rationality

free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 25% on Extroversion

free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 62% on Brutality

You scored higher than 87% on Arrogance

Carnival of the Recipes #39 is up!

Boudicca's Voice: Carnival of the Recipes

Boudicca has done a beautiful job of putting together this week's carnival.

I'm feeling better - I just realized how far behind I am in life and in blogging - especially about the wonderful people who have been hosting the Carnival of late - CalTechGirl and TechnoGypsy who both brought us great carnivals!

I was very remiss in not linking to them until today.

I get to go to London for work!

There are certain perks that go with my job - a lot of times, travel is kind of a pain, but getting to go to places like London on occasion make it a lot more exciting.

Just got my tickets - I'll arrive in London on May 22nd, and go to work the 23rd. Then, I will work thru Wed, take Thursday off and come home on Friday.

Good thing it is a long weekend when I come home!

Only drawback is that I can't find a rate where John can come with me or meet me there for a couple of days. ):

Illegal Immigration

In my many travels this year, I have seen first hand how many immigrants, illegal or legal, are pouring into the country. From Long Island, New York to Detroit to Denver to California, Nevada, Texas and Louisianna, immigrants, both legal and illegal, line the streets every morning waiting to be picked up for a day's work.

Last month, I saw hundreds of Mexican illegals lining the streets of Farmingville, New York. They were waiting to be picked up by landscaping companies and other businesses who don't mind hiring illegal aliens. Apparently, the INS doesn't care to bother with these illegals unless they commit a crime. American citizens who live in the community and object are labeled "hate-mongerors".

Oddly enough, the labor unions want amnesty for illegal aliens - I suppose that the AFL-CIO and other unions figure they can bring new life to the unions by charging dues to millions of foreigners who are curretly taking jobs from union laborers.

I am not against immigration. I am against illegal immigration. We have to tighten our borders and keep out people who do not go through the proper channels to become legal residents.

President Bush is not doing his job to protect the borders. Congress is not doing its job to protect the borders. The judicial branch is not helping, either.

Our laws must be upheld. No border crossing anywhere in the US should be allowed without the proper papers.

When I was in Los Angeles last week, two homes were raided - one had over 100 illegal aliens living in it (small house), the other had about 50 people living in it. Apparently, people smugglers keep the illegals holed up there until a friend or relative comes and pays for them to be released.

How many more houses are filled with illegal immigrants? This is ridiculous.

Recuperating

Thank God I work at home now. I have bronchitis and a sinus infection and I'm pretty much a mess. But I can work from bed since I'm now a virtual associate!

I've been sick for 3 weeks now - I swear, I will never, never, ever travel for work when I'm sick again. Last week, I could barely make it to the office and then back to the hotel. Because I was in LA, I thought maybe I could drive down to San Diego to see DaGoddess, but I was too sick to drive for two hours.

I am on all kinds of drugs - and an inhaler. ugh. I'm turning into my mother with all these pills.

Needless to say, I've not been doing much of anything in the way of blogging. It's all I can do to make sure the Carnival of the Recipes gets passed to the correct person each week, and I've not been very great at that lately, either.

Andy comes home from college on Friday - I'll drive out to Manhattan and get him and all his junk. Then he is going back out there the first of June- he is getting an apartment there with a couple of girls.

It's time for Andy to be more independent - he has a job at McDonalds if he can't find anything else, and he is trying to get on at FedEx.

It does look like I'll be travelling to Banbury, Great Britain a little later this month. I don't have the final ok yet - should get that tomorrow so I can get a flight and a hotel room. I would love for John to come with me, but I found that there are no great deals on flights when there is only about a week's notice.

I will take the camera with me. Which reminds me. I have all kinds of great pictures from my travels of the last couple of months. I suppose I should post some of them - some good stories go with some.

Anyway, I will try to be a little more steady here. I'm feeling a bit better, and I have a little more time.

"left behind" series

Some people seem to believe that the Left Behind series of books, supposedly based on the Bible, are fact.

Even the authors will say - it is fiction. But what really irritates me is that those people who believe it is true hate Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and more. They will come right up to you and tell you that you will go to hell.

The authors seem to think that the End of the World is coming - the only thing is - even Jesus said that no one knows when the end will happen.

If you all want to read this stuff, or watch the silly ass Revelations on NBC, go for it - but remember - this is all fricking fiction. It is even less real than Survivor or American Idol.

My life this week

I'm in Southern California - and I'm sick with a horrible cold and/or flu. I'm staying at a Hampton Inn that doesn't come close to normal Hampton Inn standards.

I flew in on Monday. On Tuesday morning, I got up, showered, and found that there was no hairdryer - so I had a bad hair day. I called the management, and they said they would get me a hairdryer - for some reason they seemed to think it was an unusual request. But by the time I got back to the hotel last night, there was a hairdryer in the bathroom.

So ... this morning, I get up (after suffering for most of the night with a fever) and took a shower, washed my hair (secure in the knowledge that I had a hairdryer). Only I had left my hairbrush in the car. So I combed my hair with a plastic fork left over from my fast food dinner last night.

Oddly enough, it makes a decent comb. Kinda.

The people I am working with are out of this world great folks. I was a little surprised to find that they are all very conservative - and in LA County!

Most of the guys are pretty upset with President Bush's lack of enforcement of immigration laws - they want illegal immigration to stop - right - now.

And they are right. We have always let immigrants come here - but lawfully. At this point, people who come here illegally are more likely to end up with citizenship than illegal immigrants - that is so wrong.

We need to guard our borders - as the Minutemen are showing us, just having a presence there deters illegal crossings into our country.

Here is Los Angeles, an Hispanic radio station put up billboards that say - Los Angeles, California - with California crossed out and Mexico written in its place.

People are very upset about this. And all of us should be upset about this - not just Californians.

Only thing worse than having a cold/flu is having the cold/flu while traveling.

more travel

Here I thought I'd be working from home this week, and I have to fly out to L.A. today.
I really would not mind so much except that I still have this dang cold or whatever it is. I don't have to actually 'work' until tomorrow morning, so I think if I take it easy today and just go straight to the hotel, I'll be okay.

This is the first year in many that I did not get a flu shot - and this is the first time I've been sick (with the exception of shingles a few years ago - that sucked!) in as many years.

From now on - it is flu shot!

Scared Bride

The Manalo, he is right.

What kind of pretentious, crazy family would have 14 bridesmaids! Boy, I bet they are pissed, seeing as they had to purchase dresses that are usually only worn one time.
