damn laptop

My Dell laptop, which I usually like a lot, is acting weird. All of a sudden, I will be typing away and when I hit the space bar, a 'b' will be entered - and then other letters don't show up when I type them and the backspace key stops working - has anyone ever seen anything like this?

It's crazy. I have to shutdown my laptop, close the case, unplug the powersupply and start it up again before the keyboard starts working right - have any of you ever seen anything like this?

It's weird!!!!!!!!!

I haven't, but my first suggestion is that you get a can of compressed air and use it to clean out your keyboard. It may not fix the problem, but it's good to do anyway. And if it does fix it, well good!

I've seen it.

Get some precision screwdrivers and make certain that all teh screws in the case of your laptop are tight. Also that there aren't any missing.

If that doesn't solve it, then the problem is the fan not running at proper speed and stuff is overheating.

If your machine is still under warranty, the fan is fixable with a motherboard replacement and it is covered. If the warranty is expired, then you'll probably need to be thinking about a new laptop as paying for a new motherboard just isn't cost effective.

I agree with RTO Trainer...

We have two Dell's here and our older one has a bad (noisy/slow) cooling fan and gets a little cranky once in a while.

It had a keyboard replacement when it was in warranty and now that it is out of warranty I took the back memory access cover plate off to assist in cooling air flow and we make sure that I don't leave it turned on and unattended for three days and it keeps limping along.

Beth, my firm uses Dells exclusively, and two things go on them pretty often: cooling fans and keyboards.

Especially the Inspirons - they almost all had to have keyboards replaced at about the 2-year mark.

It's gotten to where I buy the full service K when I buy my computer now - its about 300 bucks, but it's worth it to be able to get them to come out or ship the PC back at no charge if something goes wrong. If you don't have the K ahead of time, you can't upgrade.

I bought one for my nephew who has cancer, and the hard drive went almost right away. They replaced it free of charge - paid for itself with no hassles to the family (who were already stressed out).

Don't know if this helps, but FWIW.
