Name That Cat Contest
A few weeks ago, a lovely young cat was dumped at the Ft. Leavenworth Stable. We were actually pleased, because he is a true mouser and really reduced the number of very brazen mice that our official Army Mascot cats were just ignoring (one of the ladies at the barn insists on feeding them cat food, and lots of it, so the cats have no incentive to kill mice - which is why we are allowed to have official Army Mascot cats in the first place!).
Well, one of the other barn ladies, Kathy, took this new cat to the vet to be neutered and to get his shots and be checked for feline leukemia. He also had surgery on what she thought might be a tumor on his chest. When Kathy picked him up at the vet, they told her that the tumor was a beebee - this cat had been shot :(
She brought him back to the barn, and happened to notice that he was declawed in front - some total asshole had dumped into the wild a declawed housecat. We can't have a declawed kitty at the stable - there are foxes and possums and other critters he may have to defend against, not to mention Snowflake, Patches and Peanut Butter (the other stable cats).
So he needed a home. I called John, John came to the barn with a cat carrier, but another woman said, "No, I want the cat, I'm taking the cat home with me". Since we already have 7 kitties, John and I thought, good, we don't have to worry about this guy.
However, as soon as John got home from work yesterday, the lady who had to have the cat was on the phone. He had not worked out at her house (as if 24 hours is a long enough time for a kitty to acclimate). So John met her at the barn and brought home another addition to the Donovan family. He is a very nice cat, and is being quite polite to the other kitties in the family (who are hissing at him, but nothing more).
He is an orange tabby with a bullseye pattern on his side. He walks around the house chirping at everything. So far, I can't think of a name. John usually names our critters, but he has yet to come with something for this guy.
I need your help in naming our new cat. Our other cats are named Little Girl, RestStop, Merriwether, Barnacle, Orphan Annie, Cleo and Gandalf the Grey. Our dogs are named Shadow, Whiskey and Houdini. The horses are Willie and Petey. So, those names are taken.
The winner will get great fame for naming a nameless critter. You will be known as the Great Namer of Dumped Cats.
Here is his picture:

Please make suggestions in the comments.

"Dorp"

Xena, The Warrior Princess? That's what we named our stray, and the name might fit yours, she kind of looks like a Xena.
Or you could go with Lucy Lawless, her sidekick.
Big Guy loved that show, he's such a man.:)

One of my favorite names is "Bounce" - it could apply to a cat that has bounced from home to home, as it sounds like in this case, or to a cat that has bounced back from a serious illness or injury.

He looks like one of my cats, the late great Attila. You're a good soul - I can't stand the thought of someone turning a housecat into the wild like that.
Posted by: Alisha at November 16, 2004 9:17 AM
Well it is good I do not have animals as I had a tough enough time naming my kids.
I can't get past the beautiful symmetry he has on his markings. It reminded me of the butterfly bilateral symmetry that some butterflies have as well as their camouflage.

After deep examining of the picture at all angles, Jacob suggests "Starburst".

How bout "Mouser"?
Since that is what he was going to be, but due to circumstances will not allowed to be that.
Posted by: Machelle at November 16, 2004 11:42 AM
Aaw, the top shot resembles my baby...in her younger days.
(My stuff's in the yard if I bring home one more...I've been warned. : D)
Posted by: Key at November 16, 2004 11:43 AM
Oh, my vote... Zeb.
Posted by: Key at November 16, 2004 11:44 AM
Hmmm. Interesting choices. I don't think we'll go with Xena, however. He's a he.
I kinda like Bilateral... or Symmetry. Heheheheheheh. But then, I named RestStop, so we know I'm weird.
He's really very polite yet inquisitive. I'm thinking Butler-like names, or somesuch.

How about Beebee?
Or Chauncy.
Or Dave.
Posted by: Wendy at November 16, 2004 12:43 PM
Butler-type names? Chauncey, Jeeves, and Rhett (sorry) come to mind. First name that came to my mind was Marmalade because of the orange coloring.
Beautiful baby, by the way.

Heh - the only thing I can think of is Orange Julius. Yeah I'm bad at naming things. :-) Pretty kitty though.
Posted by: Teresa at November 16, 2004 12:58 PM
Aww, sounds like a sweetie. I had a cat that looked very similar once, her name was Peaches. But that's a very girly name... this little guy deserves something different.
He looks kind of "Oscar"-like... or maybe "Thomas". Oh, or "St. John", pronounced like the guy from Airwolf to where it sounds like it should be spelled Sinjun.
Posted by: songstress7 at November 16, 2004 1:00 PM
Bullseye?
Posted by: Lisa at November 16, 2004 1:09 PM
Ok, ok, I screwed up with Xena (sorry), but how about Dreamsicle? She's about the same color.
I used to love those when I was a kid. Wonder if they still make them.
Mmmm, now I'm going to have to find out, they were so good, kind of like Sherbert.
Oh! Oh! How about Sherbert? Or is that too fem?
Posted by: BeeBee at November 16, 2004 2:23 PM
James? That sounds Butlerish.
And I was thinking Symmetry, but thought you would think I was a case. :)
Posted by: Boudicca at November 16, 2004 4:06 PM
You said he has a bullseye pattern on his side?,how about"Target",a good name in your house. With the pattern on his head"Flame" might work. We have 12 cats. OH.and 4dogs and a bird,Names are always a trick. Pete.
Posted by: pete at November 16, 2004 8:00 PM
i agree with pete. as a matter of fact, i was skimming the posts to see if anyone else had come up with the name, and he had. target. nice name.
of course, as a submariner, we call skimmers, or surface ships, targets. that's why one of our old kittys was named skimmer. had a big bullsyey on both sides. all my submariner friends got it, everyone else tried to concoct some sort of story about how elusive the cat was.
Posted by: bothenook at November 16, 2004 9:18 PM
I like Target or Bullseye, but I think Orange Julius is a great name, and probably the one I would pick out of all of those suggested :)
I can't think of a better name, myself, because he looks a lot like my friend's cat Llewellyn, so I see him and think "Lewy"
Posted by: caltechgirl at November 16, 2004 9:51 PM
"GoldenEye"
Posted by: jlb at November 16, 2004 10:29 PM
How abour Beau?
Posted by: Kate at November 17, 2004 6:05 AM
How about Newmar? After Julie Newmar who played Catwoman on the old Batman shows. I also like Pfeiffer, but it is more feminine. Do you see a theme here?
Posted by: Amy at November 17, 2004 8:19 AM
'Handsome', because he is, and it might bouy his spirits in a new place to be called that. I like dignified names too, like Thomas and James.
Like BeeBee told me the other day; you've "earned a star in your crown" for taking this sweetie in! :)
Posted by: pam at November 17, 2004 9:05 AM
I call John "Handsome" all the time - he might get confused!
Beau is cute.
Posted by: Beth at November 17, 2004 11:59 AM
Beau is good. So is Goldeneye.
On the other post, I propose Kevlar and Aramid.
Posted by: John of Argghhh! at November 17, 2004 1:15 PM
I would have to say either Increment or Octal
Posted by: Andy at November 18, 2004 1:52 PM
Andy, those are weird suggestions - although I do get Octal - wait, how about August - it's the 8th month - 8th cat.
Posted by: Beth at November 18, 2004 3:25 PM
Octal has a nice ring to it.
I suppose we could be less subtle, and just go for '8'.
Make it easier from then on, 9, 10, 11, 12...
Or perhaps, given the multi-racial aspect of the household,
C8, C9, C10, D7, D8, D9, E3, E4, E5, and if we add a baby (heck you can get 'em cheap from China), H4, H5, H6.
Sort nicely in the computer, too.

Spicer. When I saw the pic, I thought of pumpkin pie, spices, autumn.
Posted by: Ith at November 18, 2004 6:48 PM
Personally, I'm recommending "Butterfinger."
Posted by: Omnibus Driver at November 21, 2004 2:01 PM
Well, one of the best names I've ever heard for a catcame from Robert Heinlein's "The Cat Who Walked Through Walls." A fantastic cat who could go anywhere he wanted and was frequently in the right place at the right time: "Pixel."
Posted by: Romeocat at November 21, 2004 5:56 PM
We have eight cats also although it does not seem like it. These orange guys are often referred to as Marmalade Kitties because they are almost always very sweet. Our orange guy is named Tobasco which was his name before we were lucky enough to have him join our home. I suggest you call him Marmalade.
Posted by: Azygos at November 21, 2004 6:16 PM
For some reason, the first picture just made me think, "Floyd".
Posted by: cthulhu at November 21, 2004 6:21 PM
I knew an orange cat like this named Mulder.
Posted by: maggie katzen at November 21, 2004 8:38 PM
Hmmm. Something with wood grain, or maybe copper. I was also thinking -- Heaven alone knows why -- of "Mack."
Posted by: Rahel at November 22, 2004 1:11 AM
May I humbly suggest B.B. King?
Posted by: Nancy at November 22, 2004 10:26 AM
I was going to suggest "Bullseye" but I see that I am slow in responding. I love "Orange Julius" and wish that I had thought of that! He looks like a Julius!
Posted by: Robin at November 22, 2004 5:01 PM
Opie!
Posted by: gnarlex at November 22, 2004 7:13 PM
Peregrine. It fits with Merriwether. Maybe Oriflame for his very pretty butterfly markings.
Posted by: A.C. at November 22, 2004 8:09 PM
How about Topaz? Or Amber?
Posted by: Heather at November 23, 2004 7:12 AM
I have to suggest "Cedar", although I'll add a vote for "Bullseye". That's a good'un.
Posted by: brandon at November 23, 2004 1:07 PM
General Sterling Price.
