"National" Holidays

I had to take today off as a vacation day - the company I work for, just like thousands of companies around the country, does not give us days off on all national holidays.

I don't get off on Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, or Martin Luther King Day.

I can understand why public utilities, phone companies and hospitals don't give people these days off - but most companies make us work because they can.

I am a Capitalist, please don't mistake me, but we work more hours in this country, quite willingly, than the people of any other country on earth. We have less vacation, too So why must so many corporations be so damned cheap and stingy as to ignore national holidays?

Damned stockholders.

Only semi-off topic...I was looking at my children's school calendar and noticed that for most of the days they have off the calendar only says "no school" (Christmas/winter break) or "holiday" (Thanksgiving). Only two of the days off have the holiday name or reason listed, Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Am I the only one who thinks that's odd?

They did have school today so I guess that made it a half-day holiday for me anyway. :-)

Good point. Working mad crazy hours five days out of seven deserves an occasional disruption....the stockholders should take the day off as well. ; )
