Interior Decorating
My friends, I am not a decorator. I don't even pretend to play one on TV.
Last week, John worked very hard to remove the carpeting from our dining room and living room. The carpeting was just awful - off white, sculptured with about 2 inches of padding. Since we have 3 dogs and 7 cats, the carpeting was even more than *off* white and we could never vacuum the critter hair out of the sculptured part of the carpet.
So now we have two rooms, or one really big living room and a smallish dining room, or one really, really L-Shaped room (depending on how you think of it) that needs or need (depending on whether you think of it as one room or two) fresh paint on the wall and some kind of window treatment thing.
Here is 1/2 of the living room - it's the part where we actually spend time watching the TV or playing DDR.

I think it is very boring and bland, so I went to Lowes and bought a program that lets me take a picture of a room and try different paint colors on it. I found that green-toned paints look best with the wood floor. Anyway, I thought I'd post several of the colors and let you all tell me what looks good - being as I have absolutely no taste whatsoever!
Here are the colors I've looked at so far...
This one is called Colonial Beige:

This one is called Forest Eve:

This is called Magnolia:

This is Dark Marsh:

This is Mountain Laurel:

And this one is Olive 5:

So, do me a favor and tell me which ones really suck and which ones don't suck so much. The sofa and love seat stay, so we have to work with those colors. The drapes can change, and I have not picked any kind of ceiling paint or trim paint (If I can avoid painting the ceiling, I will!).
So, all of you out there who are much more talented than I am - go at it and thanks for your opinions!

For me it is a toss up between Forest Eve, magnolia, Dark Marsh and Mt. Laurel. I think they look good since you have light curtains. If you went with one of the lighter colors, I would change the curtains to something darker. Light on light seems so bland. If I had to pick, I would go for the Dark Marsh.

I say go with the Forest Eve. Also get some matching pillows for the sofas. This is a cozy room. With the dark sofas it would take a lot of work making it a bright room, so tone it down with the dark green.

I'm kind of leaning toward the Forest Eve myself - matching pillows are a great idea, I never would have thought that.
I was thinking of maybe an area rug or something, but figured I'd better paint the walls first!

Of the dark colors, I like Forest Eve. Of the light ones, I like the Olive. If you do the Olive, I would change the curtains so they don't blend. I like the dark rooms, but I'm always afraid I'm going to get more of a 'cave' effect.

Eh, I like the Magnolia and Dark Marsh the best. But I'd have to compare the paint chips against a swatch of the furniture fabric or something to really make a decision, because the computer program did a number on making your furniture look all washed out compared to the wall color. It's probably much more colorful than I can tell from any of the pictures. Good idea on not keeping it all white though. *That* is bland.

I like that Forest Eve. It really makes the accessories pop. Some coordinating pillows and you are golden.

Go with the Olive 5, and then get some long arms and swords mounted in the blank spaces. It's an Armoury: make it so!

Oh, but wait - the rest of the house has armory stuff all over it, and the Bullet Board does hang elsewhere in the living room, I get one corner to myself!

Think about the light you have in the room, year round.
If the room is fairly dark in wintertime, you might find dark walls to be depressing and make the room seem smaller then.
OTOH, if the room is sunny all year round, darker walls can be really neat. I have our breakfast nook painted in a dark moss green -- the white windowframes and woodwork make a great contrast.
But the living room near by gets very little real light in wintertime and is painted a soft, buttery, creamy color. When we changed it from the previous light green, I felt 100% more comfortable in that room.
FWIW - and RMMV

The room has windows on three sides. So I think the light is sufficient.

I like Magnolia and Dark Marsh. :)

I can't help noticing the lovely greenery outside your windows, and it prompts me to offer a word of caution: if you're going to go with green walls, just be sure that you really love green! The mocked-up photos can't capture the way the trees will filter the light, intensifying the green-ness of the room. We had this experience with our living room in our previous house. It was painted a pale green which was pleasant in the fall and winter when there were no leaves on our trees. But once spring rolled around, the green in the room was really overwhelming. We ended up repainting the room a sunny yellow color that appeared fairly neutral throughout the year, regardles of the ambient light from outside. Any shade that counteracts green will work. We went with yellow becuase in the winter, the room tended to look very "blue", and the yellow provided a year-round solution. (A peachy or pinkish tone also would have worked well, but my husband vetoed those!) Just a thought . . . Please let us know what you decide! (we love pictures!)

I like the Magnolia, it's bright enough and gives you some color. I would stay away from the creamy colored ones.
For the curtians I would go with something darker then the walls, to give you more color. Pick curtians with colors of the wall and sofas in various shades.
Pillows are a good idea, pick one of the colors from the curtains for the pillows, but not the same colors as the curtains or sofas.
If you go with a pattern in the curtains stay with a solid color (no pattern) for a rug, otherwise you might have to many patterns.
I like the curtain rods, you may want to go with something like scarfs and drape them over the rods 2 or 3 times (kind of like a swage hanging down)
Have you tried one of the sofas where the TV is on a diagnial? It would create some nice natural light while sitting on the sofa.
Should stop now or I will redecorate the whole room, you see I'm a confessed decorator. I'm thinking about joining a 12-step program for redecorating junkies.

Machelle - we just relocated the TV cabinet to that location (in fact, every piece of furniture in there is in a new location) - where would you suggest moving the cabinet?
This isn't a criticism of your suggestion - I really wanna know. We ain't interior designers, either!

Well that last one is what we used to refer to as 'baby-sh*t' yellow. But some people like it.
Posted by: Bruce at October 18, 2004 4:01 PM
1) It's okay
2) Too green, too overpowering
3) Too olive, you could live to regret it
4) Nice
5) Nice
6) Too yellow, you'd hate it after a month
That's my two cents.

Have you thought about the forest green and trimming in the beige?
Posted by: Michele at October 19, 2004 3:44 AM
Magnolia or Olive... those are the best.
But please, for the love of your sanity, don't wallpaper. That way lies madness.

I guess moving the cabinet would depend on if you watch TV from a room not in the picture.
The cabinet might look good against the left wall (don't see a window) with the couch being angled btw the 2 visable window. The other sofa could be angled off that sofa giving you a more open space in the room.
The table next to both sofas could be a "coffee" table in front of both sofas and the little antique (?) table could go next to the window on the far wall.

There are windows on all three sides, so can't move it there. I'll take more pics of the entire room and see if you have some ideas after seeing those.

Beth, I know I'm late to this. I am NOT a good decorator person either!!! My husband, who is red / green color blind does better than I do - YIKES!
Anyhow, I suggest, if you can get little sample cans of maybe 2 or 3 of the "finalist" colors. Some of the paint stores around here actually have tiny "sample" cans you can mix just for this type of thing. Otherwise get a quart can - a bit of overkill but might be worth it in the end.
Get some of that thick poster board (you know the kind with the foam in the middle that gives it some body and it won't wilt) in as large a size as you can. Then paint one of each color you want to try out. Put them in the room and just look at them. Put them in different parts of the room at different times of the day. See how they look.
That might give you a better idea of which color works for you. If you do decide to go with a color - and you have more of the paint left over - paint a couple more of the poster boards and make a larger area to look at.
I love the pics and I LOVE that floor! Our next house, we're going to try really hard to get as much hardwood/tile as possible! Anyhow, that is my 2 cents from about the most inept decorator you'd ever want to meet! *grin*

Hmm. I wouldn't go with the Forest Eve - it seems a bit extreme in view of the darkness of the furniture. Dark Marsh, Magnolia, and Mountain Laurel are interesting, particularly if you are thinking cream trim. I would tend towards the "desaturated" end of the spectrum -- more towards grey -- when dealing with greens because they can get too vibrant very fast. (Green is the color of life, after all.)
And, importantly, what are you doing with the ceiling? It will affect how the rest of the room looks. If you keep it light, you can probably go with some darker walls. You will want to paint it even if you keep it white because I can see evidence of at least one discoloration or crack in the photos you posted.
But, most importantly, do what Teresa suggests and do some trials with the paints. You will learn more from a posterboard than a paint chip - something that looks good in a mockup may look entirely different in reality. You may decide to go with an different scheme than you'd previously considered.

I'm with Robin Burk on this one. I think the darker hues will make you feel like you're living in a cave. And I don't much care for the beige.
The problem with your current paint scheme is that there's too much blue in the white that's on the walls (there's no such thing as plain white). Especially considering you drapes and dark furniture.
If I were you I'd look into some other paints. See how you like a white with a teeny-tiny bit of green or a teeny-tiny bit of yellow in it.
Here's a picture of our living room I just took (sorry for the size). We've got dark wood and similar upholstery to yours. Note how the colors in the rug and the colorful bric-a-brac sharpen things up a little. By the way that's Mira hamming it up in the foreground. Our paint's a little dingy right now but when we repaint soon it will be a similar off-white.

How about black walls with white accents, B&W striped curtains, etc? Or try a Navy theme: Battleship Grey! On everything!

John, it will be in digital camo before I'll suffer for Navy grey!
Hmmmm.... digital camo...

I really like that Magnolia color. That last one looks very similar to my living room color, which I hate.
