Too Little, Too Late
The New York Times reports that "CBS News Concludes It Was Misled on National Guard Memos"
After days of expressing confidence about the documents used in a "60 Minutes'' report that raised new questions about President Bush's National Guard service, CBS News officials have grave doubts about the authenticity of the material, network officials said last night.
Grave doubts? They should have no doubt whatsoever that the documents are FAKE!
The officials, who asked not to be identified, said CBS News would most likely make an announcement as early as today that it had been deceived about the documents' origins. CBS News has already begun intensive reporting on where they came from, and people at the network said it was now possible that officials would open an internal inquiry into how it moved forward with the report. Officials say they are now beginning to believe the report was too flawed to have gone on the air.
If these guys got a computer and checked out INDC, Captain's Quarters, Little Green Footballs, RatherBiased and Allah Pundit once in a while, they would have known this the day after 60 Minutes II featured the fake documents.
Of course, after reading that Rather apparently offered his support to Bill Burkett, the person who apparently supplied the fogeries, I wonder if CBS News has any clue as to what goes on in their News Department.
Whatever direction CBS News goes on this mess, it is way too little and way too late. If CBS is so biased as to be blind to false 'news', they no longer deserve anyone's respect.

I saw this in our paper and laughed. It's like sticking that pinky toe in the water to check the temperature. "OK, we won't just flat out admit we're wrong, we'll just insinuate we might be... then slowly we'll immerse ourselves in how we were so horribly misled." Dopes.
