Kerry is a jerk
Well, apparently, they got enough pancake makeup on him to hide the bright orange.
But he is still being a fricking jerk - he keeps saying that Iraq is not a focus of the war on terror. He is bitching about Afghanistan and how come we have not found Bin Laden.
Bush has his facts down. He repeats Kerry's statements of last year that the world is better off without Saddam. Bush says that we can go after both Bin Laden and Saddam at the same time.
Oh my - Kerry thinks he has more credibility than Bush!

Darn ATM Machine
I stopped at a local bank this morning to get some cash and after I got my cash and my receipt from the ATM machine, my card started to pop out, and was suddenly swallowed by said machine.
The bank said that the ATM lady had already been by this morning but that she should be able to get it back for me tomorrow morning.

The Doctor was good
We cut one medication out altogether (the ACE Inhibitor which never brought my pressure down anyway - a different medical providor prescribed that) and switched to a different beta blocker. I took the first dose last night with dinner and had enough energy to take Shadow (our big dog) for a 1 mile walk this morning - a good start.
Here's a picture of my Shadow puppy (well, he is 11 years old, not quite a puppy)

He really enjoyed the walk.

Mrs. Lileks has it maid!
From the Bleat
At 4:59 PM I hose the living and dining room and sunporch with Pier One Citrus Cilantro air freshener. See, if I really pour it on at 5, there's a light fresh lingering fragrance at six when my wife comes home after a hard day at work. I want her to come home to a house that's immaculate, and presents no obligations or duties. Nothing to sweep or dust or sort or clean. All she has to do is eat dinner and spent the night with her daughter. I get boocoo husband points and she has absolutely no basis for complaining if I want to go upstairs and play Doom for an hour. Yes, guys, I do have it figured out.
Wow.

Depression
I thought I was depressed and had been depressed for a long time. It's been harder and harder for me to get my ass out of bed and to work and sweet, lovely, wonderful John has been picking up a lot of my slack around the house and at the barn, etc.
This morning, I was in a rush to get to work. I forgot to take the blood pressure pills I was on.
Oh. My. God.
For the first time in 3 years, I was not dizzy and light headed when walking from the car to the office. I did not feel like I was going to fall asleep at 1:00 this afternoon. I was in a genuinely good mood at work. I felt .. could it be .. normal?
So I looked up the 3 drugs I take and found that the side effects for 2 of them are ..... depression!!!!!
Yes, I know I need to take them, but now I can go to the doctor with data in hand and see if there aren't alternatives.
I had my blood pressure taken today and it was normal. But I know it might not be tomorrow.
I have gained a lot of weight in the past few years - it's probably a cause of the high blood pressure that I never had before in my life - but the pills that keep my pressure down also make me exhausted and depressed - with no energy to exercise. And when I say no energy, I mean the energy to put one foot in front of the other when just walking to the car some mornings.
So, the moral is - look at how you feel - check to see what side effects are likely with drugs you are taking and then - go see your doctor.
I will try to get in tomorrow - I'm too young (even if I'm 51) to feel tired and depressed all the time.

Food and Wine
Professor Bainbridge has started a new blog on wine - it looks like a good place to read some wine reviews.
Professor Bainbridge on Wine
I will be honest here. I love wine, but my pocketbook does not allow me to buy many of the wines that Prof. Bainbridge talks about - his idea of cheap wine is under $18 a bottle. My idea of cheap wine is under $10 a bottle!

Some Europeans think they should vote in US Elections
I completely missed this, but Wacky Hermit has some good commentary on this knuckhead - no, let me call him a nincompoop (thanks for reminding me of this word, Ambra), Jonathon Freedland, who thinks that Americans are incapable of making the *right* decision.
So perhaps it's time to make a modest proposal. If everyone in the world will be affected by this election, shouldn't everyone in the world have a vote? Despite Bob Dole, shouldn't the men who want to be president win the support of Liverpool and Leipzig as well as Louisville and Lexington
And Euros call Americans arrogant?
It would not surprise me if Kerry and Company agreed with that sentiment.
Holy Cow!!!

Update on the guy who sheds
I had to go up there again on Friday, and I thought that i'd get away without running into the incredible shedding man, because I was to just go and train the operators in the operations room.
But he caught me on my way out, and I spent a couple of hours trying to get him to pay attention to what he is doing.
Friday he had cleaned up a little and talked a lot about movies, etc., but didn't seem to want to keep his mind on work!
I was very happy to get home.
I'm seriously thinking about putting a resume together and looking for another job. This guy just creeps me out.

It's Friday!
Technology is a wonderful thing. This morning, I'll be training a guy in Massachusetts while I am here at home. I will be able to take control of his server and show him what to do without leaving the comfort of our 'computer room' here at home.
I wish I could do that with all our customers. This afternoon, I have to drive up to St. Joe to train some operations guys at the place with the shedding man.
But, the cool thing is, I am able to work from home more and more as the technology to meet and collaborate improves almost daily.
But it is really only good for shorter sessions - maybe 3 hours tops - anything more than that, and it's better to be face-to-face.
And even better, it is Friday!

Democratic Underground Funny of the Day
Somedays, when my blood pressure is down, and I'm in a daring mood, I go to the DU Forums to see what the leftist side of the world is thinking.
Well, at least one Democrat is dismayed and upset because he or she has a friend in Mensa who is *still* going to vote for Bush.
Go, read the replies. They are pretty silly folks there, don't ya think?
Posted by Beth at 7:39 AM | Comments (2)
It's Wictory Wednesday!!!!
President Bush is polling better than Kerry in some surprising states - Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and even Oregon. But we cannot become complacent.
For me the entire election is about the Global War on Terror. President Bush is the only man running who will continue this fight, no matter what.
It should be obvious to thinking people that Wahabists' intentions of taking over the world and making us all Moslem living under Sharia is a bad thing. President Bush recognizes this.
Yes, war is a hard choice - but there are things worth fighting for, and independence and freedom from terror are most definitely worth fighting for.
So, please, register to vote, donate your time to President Bush's campaign, and when you go to vote, please vote for President Bush.
All the bloggers listed below are also proud to support President Bush.

Want a laugh - go to the DU
People in the Democratic Underground are thinking about leaving the country because Dan Rather caved in. Of course, they are all saying they will vote before they leave.
One compares himself to Ann Frank's family.
Another one says that Canada is too cold and doesn't know where he will go.
I would advise them to first try to find a job in the country of their choice - they may be surprised to find that jobs are much easier to find here than anywhere else, and that Americans are paid more, by and large.
I bet they have second thoughts about how awful the USA is once they get a load of living in another country.
Really, people, take a reality pill.
CBS and Dan Rather got caught reporting that forgeries were the real thing. Looks more and more like the Kerry Campaign was in on it somehow.
The DUers are nuttier than I realized.
Thank Allah for the tip!

I want them dead
More than anything, I want to see the men responsible for these horrors dead.
I don't care if we have to torture someone to get to these madmen in Iraq. I don't give a shit what the world thinks of us if these people are put in front of a firing squad. I just want them dead.
I want the US to get help from the Mossad and the English spy guys, can't think of what they are called, and of course our CIA and find these sons of bitches and kill them dead. If they could kill them each 10 times, that would be okay with me too.
If one of them showed up at my doorstep, I would not hesitate to pull the trigger again and again and again to kill these sub-humans who so blatantly behead American and English and Italian and Nepalese civilians.
And I bet none of our civilians are allowed to keep a sidearm with them for protection - but they obviously need to do so, don't they?

Burkett is a sad, sad bit of a man
Captain's Quarters, as always, does a great job of reporting on the USA Today interview with Bill Burkett.
As I read this, though, all I could wonder is how sick is this man? Did he fake a seizure, or did he actually have one because his subconscious couldn't let him continue on with the lies?
I pity him, really - he is obviously at least mentally ill, and obviously copes rather poorly. Too bad such a pathetic creature has managed to nearly bollix up a sitting President's re-election campaign.
It looks to me like Bill Burkett is the only person responsible for these 'memos'.
Well, aside from CBS and the DNC.

Just gotta vent
For the past couple of weeks I've been helping out one of our customers in another town that is within driving distance. They have been having some problems with a system that my group installed, and I went to go fix it for them and try to train the guy they have assigned to be responsible for it.
Folks, this guy is weird. He gives me the creeps and the willies. Ugh, yuck ick.
First off, he has a a skin problem on his face - his forehead flakes. It flakes a lot.
One day last week, the flakes had yellowed and stuck in the creases of his skin (he's about my age and has some wrinkles). There are flakes on his glasses - I don't even know how he sees through the fog of flakes.
Yuck, ick owwiee. Gag.
He also seem to have problems shaving. I don't know why he just doesn't grow a beard and be done with it - but he misses lots of spots - and it looks kinda icky, but it's not just that.
He has boogers in his nose. Visible boogers. He doesn't seem to be aware of them.
And he sweats. This is a little skinny guy who is about my height, with overly long grey hair and a bald spot who sweats, flakes and has visible snot.
The guy has an awful work ethic. He comes and goes and leaves *his* office a good hour before I do every time I'm there.
So here is this little skinny guy who has greasy grey hair with a bald spot, sweats, flakes, has snot and a terrible work ethic.
He also hates his wife. But they stay together for the kids.
So I'm trying to train a guy who hates his wife, has greasy hair with a bald spot, sweats, flakes, has visible snot and a terrible work ethic.
I'm trying to teach this guy something he has never learned before. I try very hard not to cringe when making eye contact. I have had to have lunch with the guy 4 times. I don't even watch him eat.
Today, I made the mistake of letting him use my laptop as I walked him through some processes (I make people go through the steps, that way they learn them better).
At 4:00 pm, he said it was time for him to go home, so he left.
I looked at my laptop keyboard.
He shed on it.
Flakes, flakes and more flakes. I didn't want to look too closely in case there was dried booger there, too.
Oh, I am sooooo grossed out!
So I shook it out, brought it home, and my wonderful husband, John, vacuumed it and sprayed lysol on it.
I have washed my hands at least 6 times since 4:00 pm this afternoon - it is now 6:20.
I am not a neatnick. I am hardly anal when it comes to personal appearance - but this guy has me so squeamed out I could cry.
Thank God I don't have to go back there until maybe one day next month.

Too Little, Too Late
The New York Times reports that "CBS News Concludes It Was Misled on National Guard Memos"
After days of expressing confidence about the documents used in a "60 Minutes'' report that raised new questions about President Bush's National Guard service, CBS News officials have grave doubts about the authenticity of the material, network officials said last night.
Grave doubts? They should have no doubt whatsoever that the documents are FAKE!
The officials, who asked not to be identified, said CBS News would most likely make an announcement as early as today that it had been deceived about the documents' origins. CBS News has already begun intensive reporting on where they came from, and people at the network said it was now possible that officials would open an internal inquiry into how it moved forward with the report. Officials say they are now beginning to believe the report was too flawed to have gone on the air.
If these guys got a computer and checked out INDC, Captain's Quarters, Little Green Footballs, RatherBiased and Allah Pundit once in a while, they would have known this the day after 60 Minutes II featured the fake documents.
Of course, after reading that Rather apparently offered his support to Bill Burkett, the person who apparently supplied the fogeries, I wonder if CBS News has any clue as to what goes on in their News Department.
Whatever direction CBS News goes on this mess, it is way too little and way too late. If CBS is so biased as to be blind to false 'news', they no longer deserve anyone's respect.

Really good and fast spaghetti sauce
I'm not sure if this counts as a recipe, but I am going to enter this in the Carnival of the Recipes. If you have a recipe you would like to share with the Blogosphere, send it to recipe.carnival(at)gmail.com and it will be highlighted in this week's carnival which will be hosted by Jennifer of Mellow Drama.
Through the years, I have learned how to take off the shelf a jar of this or that and turn it into something that tastes a lot better and homemade. I shall now share with you my secret for turning any jarred spaghetti sauce into something that people will remember.
Now, before I get into this, I do make a spaghetti sauce that takes 8 to 12 hours to make, but since I have a full time job, I have figured out ways to cut the cooking time quite a bit without losing flavor.
Here are the ingredients:
1 quart size jar of whatever kind of spaghetti sauce you might like, Ragu, Prego, whatever.
1 to 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
1 to 1 1/2 pounds of good Italian sausage - mild, medium or hot - chopped up
1 large onion, chopped
several cloves of garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon or more (to taste, but at least one teaspoon) of Red Pepper Flakes
A handful of fresh basil, chopped, or about 1 tablespoon of dry basil
A handful of fresh oregano, chopped, or about 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
a few sprigs of fresh thyme, chopped, or about 1 teaspoon dried
about a 1/2 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped or a large pinch, dried
You can substitute a couple of tablespoons of Italian seasoning for the above herbs if you wish.
1 28 ounce can of Tomato Puree (not sauce!)
Olive Oil
salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon sugar
Red Wine
1/4th to 1/2 pound of fresh mozzarella, if you can get it - fresh mozzarella is very soft and is better the fresher that it is
a couple of ounces of grated aged Parmesan cheese
How to prepare
Heat a large, deep saucepan until hot, then add a tablespoon or two of olive oil (hot pan, cold oil, food won't stick!)
Sauté the onions for a few minutes in the olive oil, then add garlic
After another few minutes, add ground beef and Italian sausage, turn heat to low and cover pan with lid.
It will take 15 or 20 minutes for the beef and sausage to brown - keep an eye on it and stir when needed.
When the meat is browned, drain the onions, ground beef and Italian sausage and return to pan.
Add the store bought spaghetti sauce, the 28 ounce can of Tomato puree and all the herbs.
Add the sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt and at least 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper. Stir and allow to simmer for about an hour.
While you are cooking, you should have a nice glass of red wine or two. My rule is this, for every glass of red wine you drink, add a glass of red wine to the sauce - this does wonderful things to a tomato based sauce, if you have never tried it, well, it's pretty hard to describe, but it is good!!!
Taste the sauce at this point - you may need to add more salt, more spices - use your own judgment.
When the flavors are the way you like them, take the fresh mozzarella and cut it into small slices - add the slices to the sauce and stir.
This is very good after only about 1 to 1 1/2 hours of simmering - the longer you cook it, the better it is, but is is a lot easier than starting completely from scratch, and faster.
Serve the sauce over spaghetti or your preferred pasta, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
Enjoy. We do!

Blog Comments
I hereby announce that I am *not* going to register with any more blogs anywhere just so I can make a comment.
I have already registered at probably 15 blogs, and it is a royal pain in the ass to do so. I can't always keep the same login and password on all these places, and it's just become totally ridiculous.
I'm sure those bloggers won't miss my comments, anyway.
I will probably end up posting more and linking to those blogs (which of course helps them on the TTLB Ecosystem - more links) or just stop going to those blogs altogether.
I can understand bloggers with no comments at all, like Glenn Reynolds or Rachel Lucas - they just don't want to bother with them.
But if you are going to have comments you do have to put up with protecting yourself against comment spam, and a few other pain in the ass things (John and I manage to do this), but I do not believe you should inconvenience your readers by forcing them to register just to give their opinion when you are virtually asking for their opinion.
If everyone in the Blogosphere used the same registration, well, that might maybe be okay with me, at least I'd only have to remember one user name and password, but on the whole, I think of it as being as annoying as the idea that I should register my guns.

The Kerry Campaign's Stunning Arrogance
Seems that they sent John Kerry's sister, Diana, to Australia.
Since Australians don't vote in American elections, one wonders why she went there. Apparently, she went there to tell them that they are endangering their safety by being allies of the USA.
Read it all at Captain's Quarters.. I was not originally going to post anything about this, but since I have to go through a registration process to post on the Captain's Quarters blog, it was easier just to blog about it here and link to him.

Why I Keep Using IE
I have tried Firefox, the last three versions in fact. I'm sure it works well for normal surfing, but I lose my buttons in MT for Bold, Italic, Underline and URL.
I suppose I could spend several hours trying to figure out why, but frankly, I don't have several hours to try to make MT work correctly in Firefox, so I continue to use IE.
If anyone knows of a very quick fix for this, let me know - but if it is something that requires rewriting templates and stylesheets, arggggghh- fergit it!

Darfur
In Darfur, genocide is occurring. No doubt about it.
U.S. Ambassador John Danforth, in a chilling recital of abuses in Darfur, said some 50,000 people had been killed, 1.3 million civilians had been uprooted from their homes and 2 million people were in need of relief.
But the UN acts like an ineffective parent with threats that it will probably never carry out - "Oh, stop it, Sudan, you are misbehaving! Stop it right now or we might vote for oil sanctions, you are being naughty and we won't have it" the UN cries.
But Sudan knows that its pal, China will veto any real santions, so it's just like the UN is daddy saying, "do that one more time, Timmy, and I'll punish you, why, I'll take away a toy." While all the while, Timmy knows that mummy won't allow daddy to punish him at all.
And while the UN fiddlefarts around, how many thousands more will be killed by Arab Militias?
Anyone notice a similarity in the hotspots in the world?

Blogroll
I try to go through and read everyone in my blogroll at least once a week.
Today, as I was sobbing from reading Helen's story of her babies, I looked at her blogroll, and saw Margi Lowery. I looked at my blogroll, because I realize that I had not read Margi for a long time, and realized that it was not there.
Damn, I'm sorry Margi! I didn't mean to lose you. But, I have you back now.
Then I went on to blogroller and fixed the duplicate links and the no longer existent links and changed Pam's title from drowning at 2 feet under to Pamibe.
Hope that is right.
If I should have you on my blogroll, and I don't, please let me know.
And to Helen, hugs, and hugs and hugs and hugs!!!

Islamofascists hate all Western Countries
Enough of Rathergate, mean people making toddlers cry and blogospheric vanity - we are at war, pay attention!!!
Apparently, trying to appease the Muslim asshats who have declared war on Western Civilization has done nothing to help the French.
DUBAI - The Islamic Army of Iraq, which is holding two French journalists hostage, said Tuesday night that France is an "enemy of Muslims," in a statement on a website that gave no details on the fate of the captives. The statement, carried on http://iaminiraq.tripod.com, cited France with a list of "crimes" that France had allegedly carried out against numerous Muslim countries.
"France has distinguished itself for its war against Islam and Muslims and has committed butchery against the nation," said the statement, whose authenticity could not be verified.
"France's history with Muslims is a black one, blemished by hatred and malice and blood. Its modern history is no less so that in the past," the statement added, calling on the "Islamic nation to unite against its enemies," such as France.
It accused France of "playing a principle role in blocking Muslims from taking power in Algeria after their victory" in 1992 legislative elections.
It said French prisons are "full of Muslims" being held in the name of the fight against terrorism, while denouncing continuing French support for the "Zionist entity" (Israel) and its "war against the symbols of Islam, such as the headscarf" for women.
The French journalists Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot, along with their Syrian driver, were kidnapped on August 20.
The hostage-takers initially demanded that Paris rescind its ban on the wearing of Islamic headscarves and other "conspicuous" religious insignia in state schools, but the law went into effect on September 2 as planned.
After an unprecedented wave of condemnations from the Arab and Muslim worlds, the group seemed set to release the men but for the past week there has been no news.
The statement said "true professionals, be they journalists, doctors or others, who do not carry out any activity of sabotage ... are not the target of the Islamic Army," the statement said.
"We respect those who are on a genuine humanitarian mission ... and are not pursuing missionary or intelligence objectives."
"The Islamic Army has an organism for sharia (Islamic law) to settle such matters by a fatwa (religious decree) in conformity with the Book (the Koran) and Sunna (Islamic tradition). The Islamic Army respects the ulemas (Muslim scholars) of the nation."
The statement accused France of "active participation in starving the Iraqi people for 12 years," an allusion to UN sanctions on the regime of Saddam Hussein after the Gulf War.
And it ridiculed France's refusal to participate in the US-led war on Iraq last year, saying that was calculated to "protect its own interests and not to please the Iraqis."
These people are serious about getting rid of Western Civilization. This is so obviously becoming World War III - more and more every day.
Why aren't any of our politicians pointing this out? We have got to go after these people like we did the Japanese and Germans in World War II - this is not a 'police action'. Our way of life is being threatened. Our religions, from Judaism to Christianity to paganism are being threatened.
These people will rape and kill our children as they did the Russian children. They are the enemy. There is no more time for nice nice talk with the extremist Muslims. They have declared war on all of us - including the French.
Thanks to Merde in France for the tip.

CNN.com - Al-Jazeera: Video shows U.S., UK hostages - Sep 18, 2004
Al-Jazeera aired video Saturday of what it said showed two Americans and one Briton, seized two days ago from their home-office in central Baghdad.
What moral responsibility do media outlets like As-Jazeera have?
To my mind, if Al-Jazeera knows who these people are - people who are illegally targeting civilians - Al-Jazeera has a responsibility to tell the Iraqi government.
Have Al-Jazeera photographers been taking these actual videos? If so, they are war criminals.
If an Al-Jazeera 'reporter' knows of these atrocities and does not report them to proper authorities, is he not also a war criminal?
Otherwise, Al-Jazeera is simply another arm of terrorism and should be destroyed in Iraq, Afghanistan.

Naturally, CBS is full of BS
Excuse me, any of you who hate profanity, do not read this!
What a bunch of fuckin' bullshit!!!!
We learn from Captain's Quarters
... from CBS News division President Andrew Heyward: We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing.
The entire way home from work at a site that is about 50 miles away, I listened to the radio, waiting for CBS's explanation of the most definitely forged memos.
Go read Captain's Quarters - he is more sane than I am on this - and I agree completely with his message.
But what really gets me is that Bernie Goldberg warned us all about CBS in his book, Bias, and it seems that no one listened.
Never again, never again will I ever turn on any supposed 'news' program, 'news' magazine or 'news' anything else on CBS.
Jay Leno was right it is the C ........................ BS network!!!!

Recipe Review
Yum. I made Jack of Random Fate's Beef Stroganoff last night and it was great! It uses black and cayenne pepper instead of paprika, and I really, really like it a lot.
I especially like the way that Jack, a physicist, has all the timing figured out - when you add this, turn on that - it worked perfectly.
Remember, get your recipes in by midnight Thursday to recipe.carnival(at)gmail.com and share your yummy recipes with the rest of the blogosphere. This week, Amy of Prochien Amy will be our gracious hostess!

Kerry wants to be "CEO"
John Kerry has a column in the Wall Street Journal editorial page today. You can read it in the WSJ.COM Opinion Journal.
First of all, whoever wrote this for him should be fired. It is clichéd from the title to the last sentence. The title is, "My Economic Policy - A new CEO in Washington would be good for American business."
I'm sorry, but that sounds so much like a subject that my high school English Composition teacher gave us all to write about.
But that's just a petty objection - so the smart guy from Yale is a poor writer, or hires poor writers - so what.
75% of his article is just plain old Bush bashing. That turns me off immediately. He doesn't even mention the effect that the September 11th terrorist attacks had on our economy - he blames everything bad on Bush. But, that is to be expected from the people who have taken over the Democrat Party these days - anyone with a modicum of common sense has been stomped on by the Moore and Gore types.
What concerns me is this - he talks about closing 'tax loopholes' that are supposedly encouraging companies to create jobs overseas and then giving corporations a 5% tax cut.
I am not trying to stop all outsourcing, but as president, I will end every single incentive that encourages companies to outsource. Today, taxpayers spend $12 billion a year to subsidize the export of jobs
Details, Kerry, I want details - what, exactly, are these loopholes? Why is it so bad for American corporations to have overseas subsidiaries? The company I work for hires people in those countries where we have a presence rather than shipping Americans overseas - is Kerry going to tax them for doing that? Because in many cases, they have no choice - the cost of doing business in some countries is hiring people in that country.
He goes on a bit later:
My plan would take the entire $12 billion we save from closing these loopholes each year and use it to cut corporate tax rates by 5%. This will provide a tax cut for 99% of taxpaying corporations.
First of all, this leads me to ask just how many non-taxpaying corporations there are in this country - are they non-taxpaying because they are losing money, or because there are other tax loopholes that Mr. Kerry is not going to close? And more importantly, what about small businesses - they do business in other countries, too - are they going to be punished if they hire a Mexican trucker to haul merchandise to the United States?
Kerry also said this:
Yet what President Bush cannot explain is how the last 11 presidents before him--Democrats and Republicans--faced wars, recessions and international crises, and yet only he has presided over lost jobs, declining real exports, and the swing from a $5.6 trillion surplus to trillions of dollars of deficits.
On the face of it, you might think, wow, even World War II didn't make the economy that bad - but guess what - count back 11 presidents and you get to Harry Truman. Roosevelt is not even in the picture. And, Mr. Kerry - we are in World War III, whether you realize it or not.
Deficits are necessary during war - and to help an economy out of a recession. Bush's tax cuts kept us from going into a much deeper recession. No doubt about it.
And by using dollar figures rather than percentage of the GDP when talking about the deficit, Kerry disguises the fact that the deficit is only 4.2% of the GDP today - it was 6% in 1983. And in 1983, we were not in any wars, so Kerry's statement is misleading if not false.
I have to get ready for work - but in the interest of full disclosure, I am blogging nekkid in our third bedroom office - no pajamas here.

Work
Have to run off to work now. The company I work for does reward me for all the time and travel I put in. I got promoted up another rung on the ladder.
Don't know what kind of raise I'll get with it yet, but past raises have been ... generous.
Of course, when you go up a level, they expect more from you, naturally. So I am going to try to work smarter, not longer.

Oprah
Whatever one may think of Oprah Winfrey's politics (and I mostly disagree with her), I think it was very cool that she gave her audience members cars yesterday.
What's kinda neat about Oprah is that she takes a personal interest in giving her money away - she doesn't just write checks to big foundations like other super-wealthy folks, she has her people search out folks who can use some help - who would otherwise not get any. These were not folks on welfare who got cars, but people who needed cars.
It's sweet.
But I still disagree with her political point of view.
UPDATE: Oprah was not being generous after all. It was a publicity stunt for Pontiac's new car, and GM paid for the whole deal.
So I take it all back!

Just can't write anything
Unlike Al Gore and John Kerry, I want to sound reasonable and sensible when I rant about stuff. But I am so absolutely amazed by the hatred of President Bush demonstrated daily by the dimwitted Democrats, that I am pretty much unable to write about it.
You see, I have high blood pressure. It is under control because of prescribed medication, but when it comes to seeing, hearing or even reading about red-faced, bloated Al Gore calling President Bush names at the top of his lungs, my medication fails me.

Thank God that crazy man did not win the 2000 election. He tried like hell to steal it - and I do wish that the Republicans had demanded a recount in Illinois and other suspect states so Gore would shut up about being cheated out of the election.
I read what Gore or Kerry says, and I have to wonder what universe they live in - why are they so pissed off all the time and even more importantly, why do they insist that they have all the answers yet never ever present a sane plan to carry through their ideas.
All the Democrats seem to say anymore is - we would do it better - but they never say how.
What bullshit this is. Why can't they be honest with us? Why don't they lay it on the line - tell us just who they consider to be rich - just how much of my money are they going to take from me in additional taxes to do exactly what?
It is making me crazy.

Who needs PJ's to blog?
The other day, Instapundit reported Jonathan Klein believes that bloggers are all sitting in their living rooms in their pajamas.
Now, N.Z. Bear wants to sell blogger pajamas.
Here at the Donovan household, we don't wear pajamas when we blog. We blog nekkid. In fact, we can fact check the mainstream news media first thing in the morning, nekkid, without even getting as far as the living room!

Sorry to our wonderful college son, Andy, for embarrassing him here!

Dance Dance Revolution!
I have mentioned before how my college-aged son, Andy and his friends have found a video game called DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). They are all pretty hooked on it, and it looks like great arobic exercise to me.
Here is a picture of Andy (on the right) and August (on the left) playing DDR.

They are playing the Sony Playstation II version of the game in this picture.
Well, Andy took his playstation off to college with him, but left his X-Box with us, so I bought the X-Box version of DDR for myself. It is definitely more fun than a lot of other exercise, but I can only make it for about 4 minutes, then I have to rest for 10 before I try again.
You will *not* see a picture of me trying to do DDR until I get as thin as the boys are!

Dan Rather has become unhinged, and with him, all of CBS News. They ought to register as a 527 organization with the Federal Election Commission.
For a good roundup of Dan's latest excuses, read
The Swiss Cheese Strategy. CBS's Defense is Full of Holes.
In the interest of full disclosure, I was in the Army Reserve in the 70's. Originally, I did my weekends at the Richards Gebauer Air Force Base hopital doing intake interviews for patience needing mental health services.
The hospital was closed down, and the reserve unit had nothing for me to do, so I would go and help the warrant officer type out notices to people who had missed their weekend obligation (which was extremely common - extremely common!).
In 1978, we used manual typewriters. There was not an electric typewriter anywhere around. And I seriously doubt that a National Guard Unit would have had an electric typewriter back in 1971 - the military just doesn't spend money that way.

On-line Detectives
Powerline, INDC Journal, and Little Green Footballs are all probably scaring the heck out of the Mainstream Media.
These guys did a bit of great detective work on documents that CBS's 60 Minutes II used as 'proof' that President Bush didn't attend all his National Guard meetings.
The documents are pretty obviously forged. Some very smart people on the Internet figured that out and investigated it all within one day of the airing of 60 Minutes.
Wow. And all this just one day after a journalism professor whined about bloggers fact checking journalists - how dare those damn non-journalists suspect 'honest' journalists!
Anyway, congrats to the Powerline, INDC Journal and LGF for proving to the world that bloggers can make a difference.
Maybe it's because we fact check the heck out of each other. Mainstream Media does not fact check other sources, they just parrot them.

Another Recipe Review
Allan's recipe, Mexican Chicken Chowder is great. I can see that you can play with the recipe pretty easily - serve it with a bit of grated cheese on top (if your nutritional needs allow it) or cut up some tortillas into little strips and fry them until crisp and throw those on top when serving - or a dollop of sour cream.
Thanks, Allan, I look forward to next week's entry!

Recipe Reviews
Please feel free to make any comments on any of the recipes you have tried in this Carnival or the Carnivals before it.
I'll start!
Today, I tried BeeBee's CocaCola Briskit. It came out very tender and tasty and the sauce was very good, but me being me, I added some hot sauce, salt and pepper - It's another very easy recipe to put together. We'll have great leftovers for sandwiches from it, too!
I also have in the oven Calliope's Oven Spiced Fries - I have made these 3 times now! It's a simple and yummy recipe, and you can make changes very easily - tonight, I used Kosher Salt and Emeril's Essence on them.
Tomorrow, Mexican Chicken Chowder! (from Allan!)

Left Leaning Loonies
Kevin Aylward of Wizbang found this lovely little tidbit in the Washington Post:
(any emphasis is mine)
Former senator John Glenn (D-Ohio) took the defense a step further by comparing the Republicans' misleading statements to those of Nazi Germany. "You've just got to separate out fact from fiction. . . . Too often, too often, in this country, if you hear something repeated, it's the old Hitler business -- if you hear something repeated, repeated, repeated, repeated, you start to believe it," he said.
What's wrong with that paragraph?
Well, first off, the Washington Post assumes that Republican statements are misleading. But that doesn't surprise me.
What surprises me is that for a year the loony left has been repeating over and over and over again "Bush Lied" - and now they actually believe it. I have not heard any conservative comparing Kerry to Hitler because he repeats over and over the whole "Bush Lied" hooey.
I find the comparison reprehensible. Especially coming from John Glenn. It's what I expect to hear from Ted Kennedy (who, as we all know, is known for his extreme truthfulness), Howard Dean and Al Gore.
They have all become incredibly dishonorable during this campaign. It's sad that the Democrat Party has come to this sad, wretched state.
Perhaps if they were more interested in what's good for the country and less interested in themselves, they would come up with decent people as candidates.

CNN Continues to call them "Hostage-Takers"
Quit the euphemisms, MSM - they are killers, cold-blooded killers - they are terrorists, preying on children.
CNN.com - Russian official: Hostages still held - Sep 3, 2004
BESLAN, Russia (CNN) -- About 400 people held hostage at a school in southern Russia fled to safety Friday, but scores are reported dead and some children are still being held, as pitched battles continue between troops and hostage-takers.
UPDATE: My prayers and thoughts are with all the families of the dead. The horror is nearly unimaginable to me.

The Convention is causing our server problems
Let me apologize to those of you who have received multiple pings from the Carnival of the Recipies post. My Hosting Matters server is shared with other bloggers who are getting so many comments on the convention that the server masters are trying to keep the server up by doing things like killing processes - some are commenting processes and some are saving entry and publishing and pinging processes. I had to publish the Carnival of the Recipies post 5 times for it to show up properly.
And some of you will have to repost comments until they quit killing comment processes.
It's not pretty, but they assure us it will quit soon.
I hope so. This is the first time I've had a problem like this with Hosting Matters - normally they are a great hosting company. But I guess the server we are on is not prepared for the kind of traffic it is getting.

Carnival of the Recipes #3
This week, we have a lot of great recipes to choose from. I am adding a rule, though – The Carnival of the Recipes will not link to any recipes involving household pets or horses, I don’t care if you live in France or Korea!
Next week, David Schuler of The Glittering Eye will host the Carnival of the Recipes. Please send your recipes to recipe.carnival(at)gmail(dot)com.
Thanks to Mary Beth of Random Thoughts for giving us a GMAIL account for the Carnival of the Recipes.
First off, I want to point out what has to be the most decadent recipe of the week:
Angela's recipe for Sausage Cheese Cups- What could be better than pork and cheese and Ranch Dressing!
Now go with Desserts. There are several dessert entries and I have a bit of a sweet tooth today:
BeeBee has two dessert recipes, Cherry Crunch and Fruit Cobbler – which will go nicely with her Coca-Cola Brisket from last week.
Matthew has more desserts – yummy!
Oreo White Chocolate Mousse "Cheesecake" and Sour Creme Poundcake
Because I didn’t get Kate’s Chocolate Cake in last week until rather late, I’m repeating it here.
Now, my husband's favorite meal of the day is breakfast - Here are some wonderful recipes to start the day out with:
Notoriously Nice Mike has a recipe for Gingerbread Pancakes – get all your dessert for the day first thing in the morning.
Hal, from A Geezer’s Corner can make a killer frittata
Sausage Gravy and Biscuits – 7 different recipes! – my favorite breakfast – from Professor Bainbridge
David from a Glittering Eye (next week’s host for the Carnival of the Recipes) has rules for making great biscuits, no matter what kind.
I love mushrooms.
Mushrooms! from Boudicca, who managed to get a recipe in even while preparing for a hurricane - what a friend!
Ooh, ooh – Laughing Wolf has 2 recipes for mushrooms – my favorite fungi! Mushroom Ragu and Stuffed Mushrooms.
Here are some poultry recipes - all quite different from each other:
Tropical Chicken Terriaki from Punctillious at Blog ‘o Ram.
Guaranteed moist Roast Turkey from Amy
Allan sent me another recipe this week – Mexican Chicken Chowder - you can start it in the crockpot in the morning and have a yummy dinner when you get home from work.
From Kin’s Kouch – Garlic Chicken in a Bag - Gotta love a recipe with 14 cloves of garlic in it!
And I guess I should put Marybeth's Honey Hot Wings
in this category - they are chicken wings, after all - and these look especially good.
These recipes are just - All American - and great for Labor Day Weekend!
Tater Tot Casserole - from Skillzy.
Hotter than Hell Barbeque Sauce from Damaged Justice
Teresa at Technicalities likes to fix Hot Dogs and Sauce to eat while watching the big game on TV. This one looks pretty darn good.
Acidman has the proper Southern cooking method for preparing Boiled Peanuts
Real, honest to goodness Cajun Gumbo from Mostly Cajun Dale
The Wacky Hermit from Organic Baby Farm has a Manhattan Clam Chowder recipe
Dad’s Salad from Booklore – so named because it has all the things Booklore's dad would grow in his garden - looks good and healthy.
And here are great looking recipes that I just couldn't categorize very well.
Toad in a Hole – an English Recipe from Tim Worstall – I love that we are getting recipes from people all over the world.
Helen, The Everyday Stranger, has a rather complex recipe for Moussaka – it is at the bottom of her post. Do read the whole thing. Helen is a wonderful writer. I try to read her every day.
Peter London, a graduate-italophile-libertarian/conservative-gastronome- has a recipe for properly preparing tripe. He also has a Fiat engine for sale, if anyone is interested!
Salmon Fantasia, from Alison, a new contributer who lives in France
This is a recipe that one of Pam’s commenters – Michael, from Chasing the Wind’s recipe for Tortellini. (yes, I will go anywhere to find a good recipe ).
And last, but not least, Jordana Adams’ Black Bean Chili looks just the thing for cool autumn evenings. I’m saving this one!

This is a quagmire
NATO peacekeepers 'unable' to keep lid on violence in Kosovo
ETHNIC violence in Kosovo this spring overwhelmed the United Nations’ mission and NATO peacekeepers to the point of near-collapse, says a damning high-level internal UN report leaked to The Scotsman. The report, by a five-man team sent from UN headquarters in New York, paints a picture of a mission in crisis.
It says the 18,000-strong NATO force cannot currently maintain safety and security in Kosovo, adding that the UN administration is even incapable of providing security for foreign diplomats and for itself.
The findings have wide- spread implications for the UN’s so-called "nation-building programmes", from East Timor to Haiti.
The report focused on the response of the UN’s mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to an outbreak of ethnic violence that engulfed the province in March this year, the worst such outbreak in the former Yugoslav province since NATO and the UN arrived in June 1999.
"Many [of those interviewed] believe that UNMIK and K-FOR (NATO’s peacekeeping mission) would have collapsed had the riots gone on for another day or two," says the internal audit.
It continues: "Both UNMIK and K-FOR were overwhelmed by the events. K-FOR currently has neither the strength nor the posture required to maintain a ‘safe and secure environment’ within a civilian population."
That's how well the UN and NATO run peacekeeping operations.
No one is allowed to do anything.
Go read the rest of the story - that is why they should not take over control of Iraq (which is in the hands of the Iraqi people, anyway!)

Say a Prayer - even you so-called Atheists/Agnostics
Explosions Heard at Russian Siege School
Two explosions were heard near the site of the Russian school siege today not long after President Vladimir Putin pledged to do everything possible to save the lives of more than 350 hostages including children. The blasts were about 10 minutes apart and rang out from the area of the cordoned-off school, followed by a billowing cloud of black smoke rising from the vicinity of the site.
The suicide gunmen and women who seized the school yesterday morning had threatened to blow it up if any rescue attempt was made.
Say a prayer for the families of the children and soldiers in and around the school.

More on Terrorists in Russia
CNN.com - 7 dead in Russia school attack - Sep 1, 2004
But CNN still refuses to call them terrorists - they refer to them as rebels, or hostage takers or militants.
Example:
The hostage-takers reportedly were demanding the release of more than two dozen prisoners picked up during a raid on Chechens in southern Russia in June and that Russia withdraw all of its forces from Chechnya.
"Sajjan Gohel, Director of International Security at the Asia Pacific Foundation, told CNN that Wednesday's hostage-taking was a "major escalation" by militants. "It seems that the militants are raising the stakes substantially. The Chechen militants' strategy is no longer just to engage Russian troops in Chechnya but to take it into Russia itself," he said." "They have become very successful in that. They have been able to entrench themselves in Russia."
Dammit, CNN - these people are murderers, terrorists - they are the absolute scum of the earth.
And we need to be warned - we must not allow these people to become entrenched in the USA.
I'd have my snipers smear bacon grease all over the bullets used to pick off these scum one by one.
Posted by Beth at 10:47 AM
I've had it
The crazed Islamicists have now taken over one, perhaps two schools in Russia - schools full of children.
Russian School Terror
My God, can you imagine how frightened these little children are - and their parents.
The so-called Chechen 'rebels' (that is too honorable a name to give the scum) have downed two airplanes, set off bombs and are now ready to kill hundreds of children in schools.
All this in the name of the 'religion of peace', Islam.
I can only pray for the children and their families.
All terrorists must be stopped. This is a world war. Anyone who thinks otherwise is probably a French appeaser, aka an idiot.
CNN, CBS and other alphabet news outlets continue to call these people 'rebels', not terrorists, as they are.
Thanks to The Command Post for the heads up
