It's tomato time!

Suddenly, many tomatoes are ripe and ripening. I cut open the first one on Monday. It was sweet and tasty beyond belief. There is nothing like a home grown tomato. Sliced it, sprinkled a bit of salt on it, and yummy.

Andy, our son, doesn't like tomatoes and won't taste one of the home grown ones. He says that his dad grew them once and he didn't like his dad's, so mine wouldn't be good either. I should have started growing them when he was little, so he could have enjoyed them before his taste buds got so picky!

Anyway, I looked at my little garden this morning and realized that I will have about 10 tomatoes ripen at the same time. I hate to think about doing this, but I may have to give some away because we won't be able to eat them all.

You said earlier in the year in one of your posts that we should talk about our failures as well as our successes. Well, I have to say I've been a miserable failure with my garden this year.

Bugs. Bad seed (?). Fungus. 40+ inches of rain. Scorching heat. Pollination problems. Birds eating what little I DID produce. Plus I think I just screwed up with my soil this year, I planted too soon after making the bed and it maybe needed some time to rest or whatever. The PH was wrong I think. Its also been so many years since I did this and the last time I tried anything on this scale I was in Michigan. I believe I planted too late in spring for the crops to develop before it got so hot.

I've produced a few tomatoes that were very good. Now though its so hot the blooms drop instead of putting on fruit.

Anyway, in that good old American Can-Do spirit I'm not giving up. This weekend I re-worked a good bit of my garden and planted new Melon and Corn crops.

Here's a pic of the rework. The rows in the front are where the new corn crop went in and the mounds you can see beyond are where the cantaloupe are planted. You can see the zuchini and cucumbers on the left with the carrot crop (which I still haven't given up on) beside them. In the back corner you can see my Basil and Sage which have done wonderfully. Nothing else in that corner grew though. My tomato plants on the right are suffering from a fungus due to all the darn rain we've had. I'm going to spray them this evening.

Here's a pic of the zuchini and cucumbers. I've gotten a few cucumbers by manually pollinating them. For some reason the bees are too dumb to find my garden...although they certainly have no problem finding the Mexican Heather in my yard. Go figure. The peppers on the left never developed. Before the year even - I - could grow peppers without difficulty.

Anyway, I will NOT give up. I'm sure I can figure out how to grow stuff here if I keep at it.

*scratches head*

Oh. I forgot to post this one. Here's a pic of my daughter, 13 going on 22, with her hair dyed green and orange. *sigh*

Before all the rain hit, we were getting some good tomatoes. After the rain, they all split. But since it's July in Texas I can plant some more. Hopefully the rain won't come in such plentiful supply.

Well, she's a good lookin' kid, ennyway. Take after her Mother, even if her Mother was a BAM? Mebbe that's where the taste for cammo came from?

Hah! I haven't heard BAM in a looong time. :^D

Posted by: Calliope at July 7, 2004 2:53 PM

Which begs the question... how many SWWBO-readers know what BAM stands for?

Posted by: John of Argghhh! at July 7, 2004 3:12 PM

Can I give a hint John?

Hint: I'm an ex Woman Marine. So you can guess what the "M" stands for. ;-)

Don't know what a BAM is, and I just bought my tomato plant last weekend.
I'm feeling very odd-man-out, but will bounce right back if my spindley little plant manages to produce a 'mater. ;)

Bad Assed Marine?

Perhaps - Bad Ass Marine...

You're close Rosemary. You have part of it right. Think....derogatory. ;)

Think misogynistic. Not that *I* can be accused of that. I'm misopersonistic!

Might have to broaden your thinking.
