Okay, I admit it, I'm a hotel snob
I had a hard time finding a hotel room here in Richmond, VA this week. Seemed that nothing was available. Except the Airport Holiday Inn. Now, I have stayed at some Holiday Inn's that were wonderful places with luscious rooms.
This is not one of them.
First of all, all the rooms' doors go to the outside. And my room is on the 'first floor' - that means that my door goes out to the sidewalk and the parking lot where all the SKIL Suv's for their SKIL meetings are parked.
Then, when I walked in the room - the smell - not bad - just the smell of a cheap resort hotel room - kinda moldy, maybe? It took me back to childhood, when Mom and Dad and Anne and I would go on vacation and stay at a Route 66 kind of place on our way to our final destination.
Arghhhh - no broadband!
No room service.
No superplush mattress - these are pretty old and sagg.
I will probably check out tomorrow if I can find a Hilton or Marriot of some flavor with room for me!
Yes, John, you are right. I am a snob.

You're not alone. Throw me in your snob group too. Your descriptions were very good. The smell... Blech.

Whatever the additional price, and it can't be much - even cheap hotels are expensive these days - it's worth it.

Ugh! Me too; can't take Roach Motels anymore! ;)

Huh. You brought it up, not me!

I won't stay in a place with doors that open directly outside if I can avoid it. About ten years ago I was staying in a Best Western in Houston on a trip and there was a fight between 2 guys outside my door and they were banging up against my door and all. Scared me bad. In those situations - especially like what you are talking about Beth where your door opens on the parking lot - I don't feel safe anymore.

I checked out of that hotel this morning, first thing. Not only was it a little scary, but there was a serious mold problem and I could barely breath all night long. I'm pooped!
I'm going to a different part of town to a Marriot something or other. Courtyard, I think.

Good. I dunno about you but if I feel creepy about a place I'm wasting my time trying to sleep there.

Good move. Travel is hard enough by yourself away from your family without adding in the stress of a cruddy room. Peace of mind (your husband's as well as your own)is worth the cost. Safe journey.
