Cilantro

HoustonChronicle.com - Cilantro can kill dangerous bacteria

WASHINGTON -- Another reason to eat spicy foods: cilantro, an herb key to many cuisines and central to salsa, can kill food poisoning bacteria, researchers said Tuesday. U.S. and Mexican researchers said they had identified a compound in cilantro that kills harmful salmonella bacteria. They hope it can be developed into a safe food additive that could help prevent foodborne illness.

The cilantro in my garden is doing quite well. As soon as I have some tomatoes, I'll make my own salsa.

Leave it to the scientists to find something really good about the only herb I don't like! Grr!

MLAH- all my herbs are growing in pots on my deck. Last year, the bunnies ate all my herbs, so I moved the plants into pots, and they are absolutely doing beautifully. John set up an irrigation system so every thing is watered twice a day. It's great.

I love cilantro. I use it all the time, it adds a fresh aromatic tang to almost anything unless you just don't care for it like Boudicca. Last year I grew some and it came out fine. For some reason this year it seems to have gone to flower and seed though. =/

Heh - I'm not sure if I like it or not. There is some herb in Mexican food that I get periodically that I don't like - but I've never figured out what it is! LOL.

The very best Salsa I ever had was some homemade stuff when we were at a Mexican restaurant in Puerto Rico. I could tell from the flavor of the tomatoes they had just made it that day! Wonderful.

I love Salsa, just for some reason, Cilantro with other things is too strong for me. It is a very clean taste. I have decided that my trashy potty mouth just can't take the cleanlines of the taste! :)

My wee wifey makes a basic pico de gallo from Rosa tomatoes, seeded jalepenos and cilantro chopped up together. She leaves a batch in the fridge overnight to meld, and then I drain off the liquid to make an exceptional Bloody Mary.

Cilantro is also basic to Southeast Asian cooking. We get ours from the Hmong grocery on the corner.
