You know what we need? Something we've not had for a while...

A good gun pic! Of course, this pic doesn't fix that, since it's not a good pic, though it's a pic of a fine rifle - in this case, the Castle Armory's Swiss M1869/71 Vetterli in 10mm rimfire - this one not converted to centerfire - with bayonet. Enjoy.

A friend mentioned that he had "an old gun" that was being used as a lamp stand. Turns that it's one of these, but the trigger group internals are missing. He was interested in its worth, and all I could suggest was that it would look good mounted over the fireplace.
 
I have a friend who has a vetterli in similarly fine condition. No bayonet, but still a fine rifle.
 
SGT B - odd you should mention the lamp.  The streets of Guernsey, Wyoming, have steles on them that have these rifles *embedded* in the cement of the plinth.  IIRC, they serve as road signage.
 
I'da thought we'd have heard from Joe in N. Calif on this one - if only because it *is* a black-powder rifle...
