In the mail...

...to borrow from the Instapundit's blogstyle. Except I paid for these over at Amazon, they aren't "review copies." That said - watch this space, we have a book review coming I think you'll find interesting.

So, how many spaces d'you think I moved up on the "conservative veteran constitutionalist 2nd amendment whacko gun nut" watchlist?

Replacement copies for the Library of Argghhh!Mind you, I"m just replacing worn, torn, and water damaged copies of FMs I've had since 1976 or so.  I've also got the Anarchist's Cookbook that I bought in the Missouri Bookstore (at MU) back in the day - as a 1st Amendment statement as much as anything else (store management *did* exercise their rights and yanked the book (after I bought it) when my boss' boss looked at my copy - but that's their privilege - they aren't the gov't.

I assure you, the recipes in TM 31-210 are far less likely to kill you than the ones in the "Cookbook."  Heck, a good chunk of many of the available "anarchists self-help" books are cheap knock offs of TM31-210 and other military manuals.  Offerings like the "Improvised Munitions Black Book Vols I-III are open rip-offs of the TM, being the TM broken into two volumes, allowing you to pay over $20 for a book you can get for $4.55...  caveat emptor!

While wandering the aisle's of the last gunshow of 2011 I picked up a copy of 1962 TM9-500 "DATA SHEETS FOR ORDANCE TYPE MATERIEL".  Four inch thick pages stuffed with....well stuff.
Section 9 has the "Scabbsrd, Bayonet: M1917, while Section 10 has every popular Nuclear Ordance Warhead Section, Atomic, Training :XM52   :)

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bu... OMG don't DROP it.

Ah, yes. I used to own a copy of the improvised kaboom handbook.  I was particularly fascinated by the .45 Colt (not ACP) zip gun.  Back when I still had some of my other reference books, I calculated the strength of the pipe recommended vs. pressure produced by the cartridge. The thing did not seem strong enough. I reckon what would make it possible was the the loose fit of the bullet in the bore and the absence of rifling.

They did recommend proof firing with a long lanyard while standing behind a thick tree, IIRC.

I always wanted to try that picric acid recipe.  Which reminds me, I think I have a bookmark around here somewhere to a site with instructions on DIY nitric acid preparation.

The rice-and-water time fuze was pretty neat, too.

P.s.  Oh, speaking of lists: Not only have I left approving comments at Sipsey Street, but I have exchanged emails with Edgar Steele, even before he got framed and railroaded. Oh, yeah, there's that Gadsden Flag on the staff out front, too.

To paraprase a line from National Treasure: "You've probably got your own satellite by now..." :)

I did something like that, back when I was young and curious. Shortly thereafter, a 'black, non-descript sedan' stopped out front of my folks house.
A well-dressed young man came to the door, rang the bell, and identified himself to my father; "Hello, I'm Bill Nichols of the FBI. Is your son, Chris home?"
No? Well, just let him know that we'll be watching him...
Thank you and have a good day!"
He left a pamphlet calling-out fines and imprisonment for various violations of the federal firearms act, regarding things like supressors and automatic weapons. What I found strange is that not too long prior, this was in the early '60s, you could get a BAR at "Andy & Bax Surplus" for about $50.
This WAS pre 68, and in Oregon.
