Okay, Deutsch-o-philes...

...this'n is for you.

If it's what I think it is, it'll be the final piece in the puzzle that will allow a fellow milblogger (a Marine, but don't hold that against him) to nail a pompous poseur.

It ain't the best resolution in the world, but you should a-seen the postage stamp pic I had to work with.

I'm looking for a particular event, location, and year.

Have at it.

Other than the blurriness, something looks WAY wrong about that award.  I can't find the ribbon pattern on my handy-dandy visual guide to U.S. military awards, and ain't that an elephant pinned above the little medal-looking part?

It just don't look 'right'...

eh, crap...looking in the wrong places..."Deutsch"...german...time to search again...

Sure it is German? LL a SE Asian or Indian with the elephant and blossom style pendant. R

Almost, but not quite.   "SOUTH VIETNAMESE ETHNIC DEVELOPEMENT MEDAL, 1ST CLASS IN GOLD WITH THE 1ST CLASS ELEPHANT HEAD DEVICE"  www.indochinamilitaria.com/images/forsale/medals/VM551.jpg from www.indochinamilitaria.com/vmedals.htm

Real close, ain't it?

Medal looks *silver*, which would make it Second Class, right?

Or it could just be the light...

Elephant doesn't match the other, more like a costume jewelry pin...

Yup. And the EDM has a convex surface, whereas the center here is recessed, if I read the reflections correctly.

I originally figured it for a Volksmarch medal, based on the colors of the ribbon, but I think Rod has pretty much nailed what it's *supposed* to be -- interesting thing is that it's an award that was presented to *civilians*...

Found this picture at "together we served" and it does look like the 2nd class.  The elephant isn't circled and it is silver.

Looks like Pogue gets as close as we're likely to see -- good work, all!

So, Bill, what's the rest of the story?

That's for after the FOIA comes back...
