Abusing the readers, day three...

I'm not even going to give you an "embiggen" option. Mostly because it isn't needful. This should continue the confusion, with tomorrow's post being the one that contains the twist, and for which you will not slap your foreheads, but will instead send me letter bombs.

I have to stick to my proverbial guns and continue to say Type 1 Navy rifle.

it almost has to be a type 1 or a carcisaka, but I'm sure we'll be astounded by the big reveal.

.177, If I remeber correctly.

Would help if I could remember how to spell correctly.

Three Line Mosin-Nagant Rifle, Mod 1891, unmodified, sans cleaning rod.

is it an 93 stock?  Release lever under band at front of stack.

Looks like a Sprinfield model 1903 to this aircraft mechanic...

It is on top of a hot tub.  You are all missing it.

To modify my guess, A model 1903 with a modified upper stock...

correct mine to read "03" stock.  (said my eyesight eas bad)  Had one of those in the arms room in '53 as the company sniper rifle.

The wood looks a bit  more like typical Jap wood, not the beech type often used on the Italian made rifles, so I am backing away from "spaghetti-sushi" and now am guessing that it is probably an early Japanese Type 30, Type 35 or 38 rifle in 6.5 x 50mm.

Knowing John's fetish for wierdness, I suspect this is wierder than just an every day example of one of those.

Everone knows they are Jap rifles, but not everyone knows that some were also used by Mexico, England, or Finland, the latter after Russian capture and use.   Some of the Finnish rifles were converted to 7.92mm, and that would be wierd enough to John to lust after one.

Me, I would be happy with one used by the Brits- mostly by the Royal Navy.

The Finnish issue would have an S branded into the stock.

Hm, John did say it had lettering on the other side.

well, if the muzzle is on the hot tub, and so is the front end of the receiver, and the stock is on the deck, it HAVE TO guess that it is some kind of a  Belgian looooooong gun.
