Cats and dogs, living together, you know, real wrath of god stuff...

Say hello to the newest inmate at the asylum, dropped off by the Big Brown Toy Truck yesterday - a M1948 Syrian Mauser, seen here with the Castle's Israeli Mauser.  So far, no direct clashes between the two, though the Syrian did exchange tough words with another Yugo Mauser who challenged its seniority...   There's a real difference in the smoothness of the actions - the Israeli rifle is much faster and smoother to operate.  I'll try to make some time Saturday to see how well they shoot.

Close up of the receiver markings of the Israeli and Syrian Mausers, showing the '7.62' added by Israeli armorers when the rifle was converted from 8mm Mauser.

You may also want to keep a close eye on chambering envy.  The Alawite, may get an air of superiority,  you know

I have a Brno made Mauser converted for the IDF, shoots nicely (although I have to adjust the sight as it shoots left but groups well). Finicky feeding though due to the shorter length of the cartridge, proper placement in the mag is key. Also I find the chamber quite tight, will not accept the brasss fired from mmy M14 even when fully resized.

So where did you procure these long bits of wonderfulness if you don't mind a fellow who is in the market for a mauser asking?

I have a Russia-Capture Kar98 manufactured in 1937.  A former student and newly trained gunsmith cleaned it up into near presentation grade condition.  I suspect it trades insults with my '03A3.

Imagine how history those Mausers have witnessed.

In my neck fo the woods, we don't trust our weapons to UPS. Frrom "lost" to broken, UPS is infamous for its treatment of our precious items.

QM - Since I'm a black hole for weapons (they only fall in, they never escape *this* event horizon) all I can say is, "I don't control the shippers."

Supercaf - lots of places.  I'll drop you a note and we can discuss what you're looking for and go from there.

Oh God I love a fellow Gun Nerd!

(not to the point of huggin and kissin, you understand, just a decorous handshake. Hugs and kisses reserved for the pieces themselves.)

Yes, I'll be careful not to slobber on the rare and valuable old weapons.  I will drool at them from a safe distance.

I myself have always desired an Israeli mau, but to find one in really nice condition has never occurred, and I fear that once I've put my hands on a mauser I will fall down the mauser rathole, which is a bad place to fall, when you have limited resources.
