Lazy gun pr0n for a bizzy weekend.

As penance for Boq's first post of the day today...the Castle's STG-556, with EOTech sight with the PVS-14 NVG mounted.  With a cat hair for scale.

The Steyr AUG line is one of my favorite overall weapon designs, but one thing has always bugged me:  Why're the magazines made out of waffles?

I understand the theory behind the bullpup design just fine, but somehow every bullpup gun I've ever seen manages to look extremely wrong.

Cortillaen, I don't know what the material the magazine is actually made of, but there are certain principles in design, but for less weight, you get greater strength. I believe you will find this to be the case, here.

Yanno Grumpy, if you had only told me that before I spead butter and poured maple syrup on mine I would have been better off.

Grumpy is right.  The raised pieces make the side roughly as rigid and strong as a piece the same size and shape of the full thickness.  Just as corrugation makes the items it is used in stronger and stiffer than they woudl be if the material was not corrugated.  Of course, corrugation usually only runs in one direction, and the strength and stiffness is increased in that direction but not in the direction perpendicular to the corrugation.  Waffle pattern stiffens and strengrhens in both directions.

Actually, they're all wrong Cort.  It's a survival ration.

Not being expert on most weapons...why is the mag so bright and shiny so it can glow and be seen by the enemy? Shouldn't it be dull black like the rest of the weapon?

If they're close enough to see your mag, FM, the battle is being run in a very slipshod manner...

Plus, the actual luminance of the magazine is due to the flash.  In a firefight, that sucker is tucked up under your arm, anyway.

If you are uneasy about the magazines used by the STG-556, try the STG-E4 and use Mag-Pul E-Mags. Plus you can get a kit that lets you convert it to 6.8 SPC in seconds  (works with the STG-556 as well, I think).  With the appropriate optic, you have a hog-whacker extraordinaire.  Mmmm . . . bacon!

When I've done most of my shooting with the -556, I've actually used the short 10-round mag.  Doesn't get in the way of my man-boob.

Nashville - are you new around here, or just drop down from the rafters where the lurkers hang out?

We can always use new blood in the commentariat.

What, no GPS ???

No, 11B40, that's integral to the iPhone with the ballistics app that's slaved to the sight...

Why the waffle magazine?

Dual purpose.  You never know when a snack will come in handy out in the field.

I have to wonder.  How many automatic "squirrel guns" does the world need anyway?

What's your point, Scout?  Izzat a caliber complaint, a diversity issue, what?

caliber!

Ah- if you'd said "poodle-shooter" I woulda got that immediately...  Your point is valid, it just ain't how my brain has organized the concepts.

Old Scout,

As in any questioned need for any firearm type; the answer is: MORE!

Damn,  I always thought the answer was bigger.  More is ok though.
