Combat Medic Of The Day

(Click to make your heart grow larger)

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Spc. Samantha Romero, combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, shows Rafi his new Chemlite mobile, handmade by 'Raider' medics at the Camp Nathan Smith Medical Aid Station Sept. 15, 2010. Shortly after she arrived in Afghanistan, Romero, a native of Madison, Wis., was working night shift at the Camp Nathan Smith medical clinic when a local family came into the clinic seeking care for their young son, Rafi, who was suffering from a rare congenital heart condition called transposition of the great arteries. After giving birth to her son and undergoing a double mastectomy, Romero waived reconstructive surgery, as well as postpartum recovery in order to deploy with her unit. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. That's a tough medic with a heart of gold.

Some of our fellow citizens have a solid sense of duty. She has a very big heart as well.

I'm loving the field-expedient baby mobile.  So far identified: cast wrapping material (four colors), suture, a carabiner, a CD no doubt full of Powerpoint presentations, small stuffed animals, and chemlights.  Young Rafi seems to approve.

Bight and shiny things for da baby!  I likes the baby too.  Dang keyboard shorted out when it got wet.  She's young enough to be my daughter. (eyes are rather watery right now...)

SPC Romero,  This crusty cranky old NCO is proud to serve with Soldiers like you!  I'f you're ever in AZ, first beer is on me!

Damn fine soldier I am proud to have on oour team.  The contributions of our reserve forces are becoming better known, but the magnitude of the individual sacrifices and dedication of the troops are not known or appreciated nearly as much as they should be.

Sheepdogs, all of them, even the healers.

Thanks for your service SPC Romero, our thoughts and prayers are wil all ofyou, and your familes at home who also serve.

Whoever runs against Dirty Dick Durbin in the next election needs to run this picture among others over a sound track featuring him comparing our troops to concentration camp guards.
