A target...

C'mon, who among us of an age doesn't get a little twitch in the trigger finger when you see something like this... a couple of the rusting hulks at Aberdeen Rusting Grounds.

Yup - how could we not? Life was so much simpler, then. At least we knew the enemy and could identify the boxing ring. Much more difficult for our boys and girls, today.

Yep, long gone are the days when a T-55, a BTR-60, and a BMP out in the open would have been an automatic call for "Gunner SABOT tank, loader.. ready HEAT"!

As a Bradley guy, it would have been "Gunner Missile Tank" (which comes out as Gunnermissiletank!)    "--Shift left Sabot PC left near PC laze!"

Or "FO, fire Tgt KV6005, enemy armor in the open!"

Sad to see historical artifacts rotting away from abject neglect.  Shame on those who care so little for the past.

As a Bradley guy I would use the chain gun.

Gunner, battlesight tank and pc, tank first......FIRE and ADJUST CALIBER 50!

Gee, thanks, Jim.  Now I have this earbug..."That's the sound of a Brad, uuusing the chai-ayn gu-uh-un..."

After Sir John's seranade, I'm not sure what to say. I'll have to recover from the deep trauma first.

"Add five -- zero, fire for effect!"

Oh bother...all that noise and shouting. Just call down the A-10's and be done with it. That way you won't spill your coffee or give away your hide.

 end of missio...

wait one...

they're still moving, repeat

And the Great Hall Echo takes him literally...

I thought they were moving all of these to another location?

They're in the midst of moving them.  Anzio Annie/Leopold left about a month ago.  They didn't rail her (more's the pity) intact, but she did go by rail.  According to the people at the museum who are busy packing up and shipping the building contents to Fort Lee, about 1/3 of the outdoor exhibits are being retained at Aberdeen.  This consists, I gather, of duplicates and the ones that are either in too embarassing a condition or actually unsafe (like the Brit "Mother" tank, which will probably fall apart if they tried to move it now) to move.

Still get buck fever from these.  I was commanding a Cobra company in Germany when the Einheit happened, and several of us drove to Berlin outside of the old corridor when it became possible.

Tooling along in former East Germany, look right, and three BMPs rolling along a ridgline parallel to us.

All four of us nearly died of the fever.

"One on the wire...."

Way back in the day, when training up for being a Dragon gunner, I liked that particular target. No need to memorize kill spots. Just shoot it anywhere.

 T-54 ...

Cheers

Dang! I do think we need to save the old stuff, just to remind people of how it used to be!
