Today we celebrate...

...the exploits of one of the most succesful politico-military leaders of the Thirty Years' War.

Happy Wallenstein's Day, everybody!

Ummm -- whut?

All hail the creator of the true military-industrial complex!  Things would've been different if the Imperials hadn't had him killed.

 Happy Wallenstein's Day, everybody!

I wish I could see the look on KtLW's face when he tries that one out on her at dinnertime :p

Philistine.

...and in the spirit of ongoing useless record-keeping:

Today's Google search results! "Today We Celebrate" + Wallenstein:  Number 2!

At Castle Argghhh!, the Armorer inoculates himself for Wallenstein's Day with a visit from one of the Trucks of Joy and Ordnance, bearing Shari's Berries.

If you use "today we celebrate wallenstein's day" we're #1...

If you want to read a great novel about this period and Wallenstein, Tilly and Gustavus Adolphus check out a 19th century novel by G.A. Henty -- The Lion of the North.

There's something special about today?  It's a Monday, and I've got a meeting in an hour....

Oh, Dang! Those Google victories just keep racking up... there won't be room on the fridge for all the magnet-badges!

Well, at least he didn't call me an intellectual dilettante. I hate it when that happens...

Oh, we would never do that, Cassie.  We're all Pretentious Twits here!

[Better-than-average Roy-Scheider-as-Chief Brody]:  "You're gonna to need a bigger fridge..."

Well, at least he didn't call me an intellectual dilettante.

Only because I couldn't remember how to spell "dilettante."

Well as this is the first time I've been out of the house I'm afraid all my bride is getting is a potted flower and a card. Fortunately I got her some chocolates and the sound track to Dr Zhivago last week

 Oh, *koff*

"No cat hairs have been plucked in the scaling of this photo"

and

"If you want that kind of weirdness"

*double fist pump*

Got that refrigerator handy?

Wallenstein gets his due (and a second chance) in a Baen books alternate history series "1632" by Eric Flint and an armload of historically inclined civilians.  They explore how a group of 21st Century West Virginians would preserve their way of life if their town was transposed into the middle of Thuringia-Franconia Germany in the midst of the 30 Years War.  Besides the novels, there is a series called the Grantville Gazette that does factual spectulation on how you could reproduce or redevelop 20th century technology and tools using resources available in the 17th Century.  Everytime I read a discussion of the hazards of fulmonate of mercury or the merits of rifling, I think of this forum.

I've read those books... having been stationed in the shadow of Alte Veste for 5 years.

Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Generally a thumbs up.  I like Eric, when he can keep his inner socialist under control.

I had to laugh at the headline. I've read the book by George Pages on the 30 Years War. Wallenstein was a character. Best of buddies with Ferdinand.

Only you, Bill. Only you. :-)

1632... good book.

Also, these comments are making me wonder what kind of search terms some of us must have put into Google to find the Castle in the first place. And how many other nutcases are going to search for something like "if you want that kind of weirdness" and end up here...

Actually, if you Google "if you want that kind of weirdness," you'll get bounced to Mizz Susan's place, Saker.

All three hits...

So that means the weirdos will end up at Miz Susans, but the bayonet and cat hair aficionados end up here?

In a nutshell, yes.

And you're more of a bayonet fan than a cat hair one, I seem to recall...

However... the weirdos who come into my place through that particular bit of Googling will find themselves looking at a link on my place that leads them..... Here.

Now,  if you Google "Peter Chiarelli love fest" you will stay at my place. But "Rangers are teh ghey" brings you here. It all depends where your interests lie....
