I always took my dad's lead on what it means to be a "gentleman." Bottom line: there are a lot of things you don't acknowledge, respond to, or otherwise let bother you, to say nothing of acting in such a way that lowers you to the level of the guttersnipe you sometimes have to deal with. In other words, you play nice, regardless.
I think that's what makes the floor of the Senate and House a little special, decorum (most of the time--Al Frankin and Anthony Weiner, respectively--don't count). And so it is with the democratic transfer of power--once the election is over and the results are clear, all the BS that was tossed is, for the most part, forgotten as just "part of the rough and tumble" of politics.
Then again, then again...there are limits. Oh my, yes. One of those do-not-cross lines are attacks on the family. So, when the loser calls to concede...days late...after publicizing your Social Security number and your wife's employee number during the campaign...and then tries to deflect your justifiable outrage by saying (inaccurately) that "you did it, too," well, I'll give LTC West a pass on this one. Frankly, he showed remarkable restraint, after all this guy's been through.
I think the Congress is about to get a little taste of righteous scunion in floor debates as the Class of '11 is sworn in in January. Finally, finally, finally we'll have a few more military vets and, more importantly, recent combat vets to lend a little more credibility to the argument that defense of the country is not only a choice, but a specifically enumerated obligation, in the country's charter.
Can't wait to watch the feathers and fur fly in the first CBC meeting Allan attends, assuming they let him in the room. Big assumption.

In 1981, we had around 70 vets in the Senate. Today, only 25. The % in the House is even lower. And we wonder why Congress acts so stupidly in re how they use the military....
And, yes, Dusty, you have a point. The CBC may decide Mr. West isn't really black. Or something.
And, I cared enough to support him financially during the campaign. We must contine to selectively support good candidates in tight races, even if the RNC, RNCC, RNSC still don't get why we the people are so outraged at their cranial-rectal inversion.
