One of These Things...

...is not like the others.

For those of you who aren't current in your Threat Recognition classes, or are accessing the site on your 'lectronic toys with 2-inch screens, here's a hint.

I can just imagine the latrine humor among the gunners...

Jaysus! Is that a 105?

Looks like the Strykers are gettin' a mite ornery... :)

Hey! You double-faked me, there! Methinks I have allowed the Armorer to mess with my mind too much!

Jaysus! Is that a 105?

Yup -- that's the famous Mobile Gun System.

I asked if they'd solved the problem of blowing out the driver's viewports when firing straight ahead and got a dirty look, so I didn't press the issue...

I do remember back when I was in "the bidnez", General Dynamics Land Systems was developing that little beastie.  They weren't advertising it at the time, but it was quiet knowledge for all who were in the inside.

Um, Bill ... Shouldn't that be:

Gun, Honking Big  ???

Almost as good as the hover tank eh?

it was quiet knowledge for all who were in the inside.

Quiet knowledge except when they were in the inside when the gun went off.

Then it was otherwise.

Ya learn interesting things when Uncle sends you places to be Mr. Fixit for his broken toys...

I remember a video of one slowly tipping over when fired to the flank on the uphill side while on a hill...  at Fort Lewis I believe, but that part of the memory might be fuzzy...

Hell, Bill, I thought this one would be hard.

I likes me some 105mm.  Although, to be honest, I might be a mite reluctant to shoot the M900 105mm sabot round out of something as light as the MGS.  Given that it's got damn near identical downrange ballistics to the 120mm sabot, the M900 might have excessive recoil loads.  I expect that mostly what they are shooting out of the MGS is HEAT and beehive.

let me guess: to re-use the 105's from the m1 (thrifty!!!), they ended up with something overweight, overpriced and 14 years after the israelis implemented something a lot better.

Cannon, 105mm M68A1, based on brittish 105mm L7 naval rifle.

Yup, probably in 2003. Right before they did the airmobility exercise out of McChord and discovered the C-130 loadmasters would only let them put *one* on board, rather than the *two* that the planners had decreed. Seems someone finally crunched the numbers and realized putting two of the beasts on a Herky would hoist the nose wheel three inches off the runway.

Not good for directional control on takeoff. Also not good for getting the nose level *after* takeoff.

Wasn't that thing supposed to be light weight? :)

Looks like the 2nd one from the left didn't get the message on how to park...he is facing out, the others are facing inward...Maybe for a fast getaway!
Spiff

We looking at the same pic of Strykers, Spiff?  Those all look nose-out to me!

And the Bradley was supposed to be RPG-proof. And the OH-58D was supposed to be able to fly for 2.5 hours with a 20-minute reserve. And the DD-21 was supposed to be able to drop six GPS-guided 5-inch shells on a point target 120 miles away and have them all impact simultaneously. And the F-35 was supposed to be cheaper than the F-22. And I was supposed to have educational benefits and free health care after I retired. And John was supposed to have married a gaw-juss Lady who would make him happy for

Oh, wait -- that last one *did* happen...

My nephew road in some of those beasts on his first tour in the sandbox. As grunts are want to do, they would fill the thing with ammo, and MRE's and all kinds of stuff to make their jobs. But alas and alack the Beast is a little bouncy, bouncy and there were many cuts and bumps from everything going every which way. He wasn't impressed. His choice would have been an up-armored Escalade with 9 speakers, air, and a wet bar. Just saying.

Sometimes I think I should get a small comission for delivering all those straight lines to Bill. :)

Casey, you're selling yourself short -- I'm gonna give you a full 10% of what John pays me...

Which is z e r o - z i l c h.

Which would you prefer, an "e" or one of the "z"s?

Hey!  I've *tripled* your pay since you started working here.  Even if you are disrespectful and unreliable!

Technically, the cannon on the MGS is a Cannon, 105mm, M68A1E4.  It is installed in a low-recoil mount and fitted with an autoloader and an 18-round magazine.  Which means no 105mm WP rounds in the MGS magazine, thankyouverymuch.  The WP rounds have to be racked base-down when stored on a vehicle for safety purposes, so they've pretty much been out of circulation since we retired the last M60A3TTS's.

A little online research indicates that the MGS is compatible with NATO-standard 105mm SABOT, HEAT, HEP, and APERS ammunition.

cannon n. (kăn"Ŭn) pl. cannons [OE. canon, canoun, AS. canon (cf. F. canon, LL. canon, and, for sense 7, F. chanoine, LL. canonicus): 1. a big, honking gun

Is UnkaBill intending to pass the Bar Exam at The Vatican?

Hey, have you *seen* the armory the Swiss Guards have?

I betcha Chief Bill is a dab hand with a halberd!
