Continuing the Whatziss

Neffi's really pretty close, and will probably get it today, unless he has another bout of logorrhea. That was fun, really, and those kinds of guesses are half the reason I do these...

Is that a lead casing like a mini sabot or something?

Is that the core to a Minie-type rifle ball?  Not the American Civil War version, but perhaps a somewhat later one?

Looks like a 8mm steel jacketed round. either that or a malay water carrier.

Don't have access to my Hogg books here... Boys round?

Sure looks like someone needs to be SLAPed but I have no idea about caliber.

mau 1918 round?

expended tracer round

Line throwing round. The line comes pre packaged, tied around the little groove thingys. Also holds the sabot together; keeps it from falling apart during flight and losing that little inside goody. Found to be a poor design.

A "gallery round"  for perhaps the Carl G insert (Sub Calibre Training Device) (6.5 mm and 7.62mm).  These are designed to flash when hitting a target, and have a tracer for flight indication.

Ooh! Oogh! That's one of those duplex rounds they tried out in the sixties and seventies!

Okay, the top object is a view of the outside of the jacket.  Bottom is inside view of the jacket.

Center shows the core resting in the jacket.

It does not look like the jackets have been recnelty sectioned (cut away) so it is likely that they are made to be shed when the whole bullet strikes something.

The two deep grooves (cannelures) on the jacket are a bit odd.  Perhaps the lower one is for crimping the case, and the upper one is for visual ID of the round.

No idea of caliber or nationality, but suspect it is in the 7.62 to 12.7mm (.30-.50 caliber) range, and probably not U.S.

I'd go with .55 Boys too.  I have a clip of them somewhere here, but couldn't lay my hands on it yesterday.  The jacket definitely fits.  What had me confused is why use a boattail on a core?

Because it happens to fit?
