Tornadoes, Blackjacks and Bears - Oh My

In this the Age of UUD (Unicorned Unilateral Disarmament), I am not sure whether it is comforting or disquieting to know that old Cold War traditions are still alive.  By the Royal Air Force, at least.

Just when you think it couldn't get any worse than Carter ........

From reports...we are running these intercepts over Alaska and 'Canada also. The Russkies started retesting our alertness. Yup...it's still there.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a supersonic Preditor armed with a couple of LARGE air-to-air missiles?
One could fly up and closely examine the left, then right side of the enemy's cockpit--then take up a position 1/2 mile behind and at a slightly higher altitude.
WAITING.
Fully-armed with NOBODY ON BOARD--and no risk to any pilot.
I imagine it would be very creepy and unpleasant for the enemy pilots.
We could justify it as an "economy" measure.

This the exact reason you keep an *Active Duty Air Force* with an *Active Homeland Security  Mission*. This is the reason to maintain air superiority, including all of the Pre-BRAC CONUS basing. Anytime the Russians see us as distracted, they'll start testing our borders. This is where the Pre-BRAC basing is so extremely important. Each of those bases were put in a specific place for a specific roles. The Russians are not looking at 9/11 as the start of our distraction, they look at Persian Gulf I, as a possible start, if not earlier. They do *not* want an exchange of 'gifts'.

@Fishmugger, Yeah, "The Ruskies started retesting our alertness. Yup... it's still there." The important point is your last line.

Teddy Roosevelt:  "Walk softly and carry a big stick."

Barack Obama:  "Talk softly and give up the big stick."

ok i know it's "lies, damned lies and statistics" but still, russia is no 11 (cia factbook 2009) looking at it's gdp. that's below brazil and spain to name a few. most of that is made by selling oil and gas, not by selling consumer or industrial end goods. a shakey base at best. dream on putin and thanks for the photo ops.

Naw, Barack is more like "talk softly and the throw like a girl".

Huh.
I thought Barrack was telling everyone "Talk softly and give us the big stick....again...and again...and..."

What a poser.

At the game, Obama makes a big deal of being a "South Side kid", as if he grew up in Chicago frequently attending White Sox games.

But he grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, and didn't move to Chicago until 1985 at the age of 24.

In addition to our revised "no nuke" policy, I have it on good authority that all ordnance and aircraft carrying same are to be scrubbed of military, aggressive or suggestive art or names and instead, a selection of Smiley Faces and Georgia O"Keefe florals are to be immediately affixed.

The Flying Tigers are henceforth to be referred to as the Smiling Hello Kitty's (Kittyhawk, gimme some love here)

The Warthog is now Porky (no wait, not nice to persons of volume); we'll get back to you. No wait, Barney!!!! The A-10 is to be painted purple ....

The Raptor is now the Chicken Run

The Abrams is now the Jeeves

The Bradley is now the Tad and crews are to be issued tassled loafers

The Stryker is now the Eugene Debs (too easy, I know)

C'mon, everybody play

Persons of volume... I prefer Wo/Men of Great Shadows.

"Of the four wars in my life time none came about because the USA was too strong".
Ronald Reagan

Deterrence doesn't work if there's no credible threat.

Without deterrence, war is more likely when your enemy thinks you are weak or lack the will to act.

nobody thinks russia is weak, everybody knows she is weak. small important difference. putin should invest the money in the economy instead of blowing it all on this far-pissing-contest.

PS: i would love to see some hello kitty a10's strafing the talib in astan.

Beth, you managed to simultaneously punch both my "Giggle" and "Ow! That's true!" buttons. You made me get up from the chair and stagger around the room while giggling and cussin' at the same time. I even banged head, slightly!

Geez - it's 2010 and they're still shooting off the plus-fifteens out of Stornoway to intercept the same damn Bears their fathers were intercepting. At least the Brit crews are probably not flying the same airframes their father were (unlike the Russkies).

So  Grumpy, just to let you know... Its not all active duty bubbas running intercept and O.N.E. missions. Just so's ya know :D

Raptor Chief, just so you know... This is the exact reason they called those people, "Weekend Warriors, led by 90-day wonders."  Just so's ya know. :D

Most of the Bears are probably no more than 10-15 years old and are used for electronic surveillance and cruise missile carrying. The Russians keep  the assembly lines open and build them as needed.
