Looks like the breach mechanism from a Hall Carbine or Rifle of the Mexican War.

"Unwieldy pistol" Heh. I recall reading that our guys would take that part to the cantinas while occupying Mexico, as a bar gun. I betcha if you jam it into the guy's tummy while firing it that it would serve that purpose.
