Today is also the anniversary of the adoption of the venerable M1911. Oddly enough, this occured in... 1911. This is the exemplar of the breed (well, the younger brother, the M1911A1) in the Holdings of the Arsenal.

Like many artifacts in the Holdings, this one was an orphan. It's putative (but undocumented) provenance is that it was carried by a Marine officer during World War II and Korea, after which he brought it home and had it plated. When the Marine passed, it sat, unloved, in a drawer until his son found it. Who, being a fellow of a blue persuasion, decided he simply couldn't keep such an artifact of hate. But was willing to part with it for a certain sum of money. I offered him less and he took it. The story is probably BS, but there it is. It wasn't listed as stolen. I did check that.
Lastly, a poll, by John Hawkins at Right Wing News, on who we right-wing knuckle-dragging trolls like and dislike in the reich-wing punditocracy.
Here's who we either really liked or really disliked:
Passion Index (Strongly like (+) or strongly dislike (-))
10) Ron Paul (-32)
10) Mark Levin (+32)
9) Jim DeMint (+35)
8) Marco Rubio (+39)
7) Meghan McCain (-40)
6) Sarah Palin (+43)
5) Rush Limbaugh (45+)
4) Dick Cheney (50+)
3) Paul Ryan (+51)
2) Michelle Malkin (54+)
1) Thomas Sowell (+66)

It is also reported that at least three of the legislators voting for the bill were at that very moment legally carrying some variant of the M1911. No celebratory gunfire ensued.
How many other products introduced 100 years ago are still in production virtually unchanged?
Anyone who would like to see many of John M.'s hand made prototypes for his inventions, including many of the most popular Winchester lever action designs, pump and semi-auto shotguns, and several pistol models, plus the Browning Automatic Rifle, the .30 Browning Machine Guns (water cooled and air cooled), the grandma of Ma Deuce, etc can do so at the Union Station Museum in Ogden, Utah. http://theunionstation.org
I also wish to state that no M1911 of my acquaintance has ever expressed a distaste for lima beans.
Just to be clear.
Many Happy Returns and much selfish indulgences, such as eating Breyer's Triple Chocolate ice cream, a steak, medium well done, sides of baked potato, bitter greens dressed with a bacon vinaigrette and a target of your choice with unlimited rounds.
Have fun!
And yes Happy Birthday and many returns to She Who Had the Technology for my virtual revivification. And, she was kind enough to leave me with my taste for lima beans.
Its the first firearm I ever owned and still my absolute favorite. I qualified expert with it many times and I cherish it as I would my own flesh and blood. Send me to Valhalla with my 1911 in my hand.
