Marines with 81 mm Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, fire on an enemy position Feb. 13 on the outskirts of the city of Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan. Greetings:

My favorite Platoon Sergeant use to say that one of the purposes of our mortar platoon was to get our rifle platoons to keep up to speed on their map reading.

Thats one way of getting you thrills, and ensure the mortar stays bedded in.

There was an old man, 100+ years old, but with a mind as sharp as a new razor blade. there were two younger guys playfully bickering. Now he was 100+ years, I was 50+ years and called the 'old timer', even by the man 100+ years old. The Armorer always says, "Some of us have more mileage than others." One of the younger guys mentioned, he was just having a wild hair up his tail. Now the 100+ year old guy says to me, "Old Timer,  I'm confused, I don't know whether he bragging or complaining. Now, you were in the Military, how long has it been since you could feel that same wild hair?" I looked him straight in the eye and said, "Never!"

Armorer, you're a *much wiser man than I'll ever be*, with more mileage,  how would you have answered that Old Man?

LL Willie Pete to me, some "Smoke" to mark the bad guy's position...running and screaming is just a bonus

By the angle of that round, I expect it's 'action close'- if'n the arty boys still use that term...
