   I always spelled it as potatoes, and tomatoes, and egoes, etc..... It's likely because my mother was from Oz and I learned her version of "English".  Heck, I'm often found spelling words with an "U" as in armour, colour, honour, etc.

  Just sayin'....  might be why I ended up in the Navy, too...   :)
