It is now the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month over here.Ninety-one years ago, the War to End All Wars came to an uneasy halt. That war didn't end all wars, despite the hopeful chirping of the idealists -- it merely set the stage for a bigger global war, which , in turn, set the stage for the global war John and Dusty and I fought, although in different theaters, in different decades.Four decades ago, today, at just about this time, I was just getting to know my theater, getting my flight gear, steel pot, chicken...

Bill, good point. When will we learn that, "There will be wars and rumors of war until the end of time." "Then, they shall talk of peace." The focus of the World will focus on what is now Israel, in off the coast from Haifa or the little notch in Israel's coastline. If you travel Southeast, you'll hit Mt. Carmel, then travel a little South of due East, you'll hit Mt Tabor, then travel due South and you'll hit Mt. Gilboa. These three points create a valley, some have described it as sculpted for war. Now this small portion is situated in a Nation about the size of NJ. We are talking of area less than twice the size of Ft Hood. This is the Valley of Jezreel or Armageddon. I've been there and this just too small for the task of the actual "War to end all Wars". I figure we've got about the next 10,000 years of actual war or rumors of war. But this time, let's all get involved in some way or another

By the way, I enlisted, in basic training and still got my draft notice. Go figure!
Today and Memorial Day, my thoughts turn to my dad, and to his old outfit the 41st Infantry Division. There is at least one web site with stories from some of the members of that unit. They are like the testimony of those gone before us.

Unthinkable hardships. Intense suffering. Enduring spirit.
I admit I'm an idealist. I truly hope for the day we can learn to resolve things without war and still be free.

But that's a long long way off. We're far too immature. I mean look who we elect. Look at those who can't elect. Our philosophies are disjointed, we are not united, most of us in the world aren't free, our religions where the common call is of love and kindness often deliver the opposite. We often react in fear, not reason. Many individuals don't even get along with our next door neighbours or family properly. Our global united presence is the freaking UN. We have a very very long way to go and I'm quite sure I'll be tucked away in my dirtnap well before then.

Diplomacy is nice when it works but it's not a one size fits all solution and indeed often derives ability from strength such as the threat of war or other advantages a nation has. So in the meantime we have to deal with war, the reality of now with all the resolve Bush harped on about so much. Kumbaya doesn't cut the mustard.

Ignoring reality is unwise. There are no gold farting unicorns. Except for John's of course.
