LTC Val Finnel, in an interview with Fox News avers:"Finnell said the warning signs were clear to many, not just classmates. Faculty members, including many high-ranking military officers, witnessed firsthand his anti-Americanism, he said.Finnell recalled Hasan telling his classmates and professors, "I'm a Muslim first and I hold the Shariah, the Islamic Law, before the United States Constitution.""The oath of office is pretty clear. This is the verbiage on the form you sign when accepting the appointment:I (insert name), having been appointed a (insert rank) in the U.S. Army under the conditions indicated in this document, do accept such appointment and...

This goes back to John's original post; to the point that Major Hasan was -demonstrably- a traitor, and how did we miss all the warning signs that a high-level nutbar was in our midst?

Easy, same reason we missed Hanson, and Ames, and Walker, and Rosenberg, and Arnold, and every other spy and traitor. Part of being in Army Intel is having to attend yearly briefings on espionage (mostly because the number one reason we catch these dirt-bags is a co-worker or friend notices something off). And the one overriding lesson from each is, "we trusted them". The simple fact is, you can't be betrayed by someone you don't trust. And by definition, you must trust them, or else they'd not have gotten the position with which they could betray you.

Personally, I don't like the "why did no one see this coming," 20/20 hindsight crap. All it is, is blamestorming. Someone failed to catch it. Someone didn't do their job. Someone else is to blame for not stopping this before it happened. Well, guess what. The only person to blame is the traitor. Anything else simply detracts from the blame being placed squarely where it belongs. And of course it's simple to put together the pieces to the puzzle after the fact. And yet, ask a 9/11 Truther and they can't even manage that properly. Look to see if he had conspirators? Fine. Actually, excellent... make sure you catch them all. But look to blame someone else for not seeing the future, given they have one piece of the puzzle? No. No thank you.
yes, fdcol63, because the Major proves that the real enemy is Islam, not Islamofasicsts who pervert the word of their religion to justify their own blood lust.

As we know, damn near every Muslim on the planet is dying to blow themselves up, and take as many infidels with them; or failing that cut off as many heads as possible for YouTube. That explains why most of the 1.2 billion Muslims on the planet are on a blood-crazed killing spree as we speak...

Oh, wait, silly me! Most of those 1.2 billion Muslims aren't killing effendi right and left. Go figgre. I expect most Muslims are just keeping their heads down, hoping no one blows them up, either.

In this case I have to agree with the President, no matter how clumsy he was about it. We need to differentiate between Islam, and Islamofascism. We shouldn't start persecuting every Muslim in America because this whackjob decided to become a traitor, or do you want to dig up the Muslim remains in Arlington, and throw them on the nearest dungheap? Because that's what you're doing when you lump every single Muslim on the planet in the same class.

Should we castigate every Pole because Roman Polanski is a pervert and rapist? Or should we go after the Jews, since Woody Allen had an affair with the daughter of his lover Mia Farrow (Soon-Yi Previn)? Or because the pervert "Woody" Allen not only seduced his foster daughter, but defended the aforementioned Polanski?

I know! We'll go after young male black Americans, since they all listen to gangsta rap (which glorifies thoughtless violence & hatred of women), belong to gangs, and sell drugs. Right?

Or we could go after Japanese-Americans, since the Japs raped Nanking, exploited China, slaughtered POWs by way of the Bataan Death March & other atrocities, and created detachment 731, a prison camp that would have made Himmler & Mengeles proud? Just can't trust a slant, can you? Or a polack, a whop, a spick, a nigger, a mick, a Holy Roller, a mackerel-snapper, or a beaner. Right?

Or maybe -just maybe- we should judge each individual on their merits, without recourse to bigotry or stereotyping? Of course, that would entail actually engaging the ole brain cells, and using (gasp!) judgment to determine who is trustworthy, and who is not. We can't have that, can well, else the very foundation of The Republic is at risk...

This goes back to John's original post; to the point that Major Hasan was -demonstrably- a traitor, and how did we miss all the warning signs that a high-level nutbar was in our midst?
As recently as today, we've got Obama saying this:

PRESIDENT OBAMA: "Well, look, we -- we have seen, in the past, rampages of this sort. And in a country of 300 million people, there are going to be acts of violence that are inexplicable. Even within the extraordinary military that we have -- and I think everybody understands how outstanding the young men and women in uniform are under the most severe stress -- there are going to be instances in which an individual cracks. I think the questions that we're asking now and we don't have yet complete answers to is, is this an individual who's acting in this way or is it some larger set of actors? You know, what are the motivations? Those are all questions that I think we have to ask ourselves. Until we have these answers buttoned down, I'd rather not comment on it."

And as Mudville Gazette posted recently, regarding a CNN interview with one of the wounded, the liberals are trying to spin this as just another crazed vet who finally went postal.
