I am not quite so sure that we get it. I just don't believe the Afghanis would accept the Taliban or AQ. I do believe they would give the Taliban/AQ the same warm reception as they did to the Roman Troops under Caesar, Alexander, the Great and Napoleon, just to name a few. In today's times, we should be studying the Soviets on every detail of the how, what and why of everything they tried, during their time in Afghanistan. List everything you find, those things which are alike and those things which are different.
I just think we're missing a great opportunity right now in Afghanistan to achieve our objectives there.

As the Pakistanis are now FINALLY starting to put serious pressure on the Taliban, AQ, and other jihadists in the tribal areas, pushing them into Aghanistan, the US and NATO should be increasing our own pressure and squeezing them into increasingly smaller areas along the border, killing more and more of them as they get caught in the vise.

Instead, under Obama's hapless dithering, we're going to allow them to fan out into the countryside and gain a stronger foothold in Afghanistan.

Stupid. It will come back to haunt us.
