The Auld Soldier, Colonel Timothy Donovan, FA, Silver Star, DFC, Purple Heart w/6OLC, Combat Infantry Badge, veteran of two wars, one hell of a Rotarian and my father, signaled End of Mission, Close Station, March Order, and struck his colors at 1215 this afternoon.

Memorial service is Monday at 2:30 PM in Columbia, interment will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery at a date to be determined.

His passage was peaceful, thanks be to God, and he was surrounded by his family.

We'll dance later. I'm not in the mood.

"Grief is not the end of all. I seem to hear the funeral march become a paean. I see beyond the forest the moving banners of a hidden column. Our dead brothers still live for us, and bid us think of life, not death - of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and joy of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again, and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope and will."

Even the great strength that your mother and father gave you is tested in this time. May all those standing at your shoulder help a little in the weakness in your knees. I write this to your father, as I know that he can hear the echos up in the clouds.

Colonel T. Donovan,

Thank you Sir for so many things you have provided us with your leadership, toil and contributions lo these many years. Being a humble man you might recognize the vast breadth of your contributions to community, state, country and also to family, but would never remark upon them. The thought would never cross your mind. We on the other hand, were bathed in the bounty of your contributions and we are left cold as your shadow passes on to greater glory. The hole we feel in our hearts is just a small measure of how much we will miss you, and if we were to sum that emptiness it would be large indeed as you have touched, encouraged and lifted so many over the years. You will be greatly missed.
I know he was a great man only through extrapolation.
What better thing can you say of a man.
My deepest condolences to you on the loss of your father. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

The Cavalrymen's Poem:

Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.
I'd say "Bless you and your family," but I think the Colonel handled that well enough in advance. I'm afraid wholly inadequate condolences will have to suffice.
By all accounts, a good man, a good life, and a good legacy; and now having a good time where the trials and travails of this flawed world exist only in memory. Not being able to talk face to face is only a matter of time, and, by the time you catch up, he'll have some good stories to tell and people to introduce. Hope you don't mind if plenty of people here would rather you keep him waiting a while.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
Mourning the loss of a hero is only human, and God only gave them potential. Thank them for making the most of it, and honor their memory by doing likewise.
Oh no! Say it ain't so! Oh my!!!!!!

Ah, well, as already stated, Thanks to God that such men lived.

As I am wont to say at these times...

He is in a better place

He feels no pain

He is whole again

He awaits you and yours at Fiddler's Green

As I said to my wife upon the loss of her second son,

Don't be in a hurry, he has all eternity, there at Fiddler's Green, to wait.

Happy Trails, LTC Donovan, you were a good man, and served your country well.
Oh, fuggin' a......

You have my sincerest and most heartfelt sympathies.

Your father was a giant amongst dwarves.

You know I'm in town. I'll be at the ceremony.

Drop by my shop, I have a beer, tequilia, bourbon, scotch, or... Irish Whiskey to send Paddy off to Fiddlers Green in style.

Lord Have Mercy!

My condolences not only on YOUR loss, but the loss for the Republic.

He was a fine man, nay, a great man.

You should be as proud of him as he was of you.

Pipers Up!

RIP. Colonel Donovan!
