A little trip down memory lane...

Senator John Cornyn, reacting to the White House's literal fishing expedition for perceived dodgy misinformation about administration policies observed:

"I am not aware of any precedent for a president asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed ?fishy? or otherwise inimical to the White House?s political interests," John Cornyn of Texas wrote US President Barack Obama.

True enough as far as it goes.  But there are plenty of precedents for Presidents collecting information on citizens who have policy disputes with the White House... well before Nixon or FDR.

How about that beacon of Progressive Goodness and Oligarchic Ruling Privilege Woodrow Wilson and the Palmer Raids?

Of course, that one always makes the Progressives squirm, as it was a Progressive going after Lefties and the cognitive dissonance makes their heads hurt.

I'm glad that you tackled this one before I did.  I was noodling about the same thing.

From the horse's mouth... I would also like to have an official response to his bullet points.

Don't hold your breath waiting for an official response, Boq. These folks have a habit of ignoring things in the hopes that they'll either go away of their own accord, or will get ad hominemed to death by their supporters.
