Obama Thanks Military Families With Independence Day Bash

Info ops are info ops.By Elaine Sanchez American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, July 5, 2009 - As Americans celebrated Independence Day in homes throughout the nation, President Barack Obama invited about 1,200 military family members to his home for a July Fourth bash yesterday to personally thank them for their service and sacrifice. "Michelle and I are honored and proud to have you here on the Fourth," said Obama, addressing the audience from a balcony overlooking the White House's South Lawn, which had been transformed into a sea of red, white and blue for the event. "It is, after all, your...

Nope - just saw a photo, they actually got to wear civilian clothes. Good on whoever made that call - somehow I don't think it was anyone in the Pentagon. (But then I guessed wrong about the dress code in the first place.)

Words, just words, from the teleprompter.

The fact that he makes a big deal out of this just confirms its phoniness. Greet a few on the balcon, but not mingle for hours with the troops? Guess he had to go play hoops or study how other countries repress dissenters.

Watch not what he says, but what he does to our country.

This is the same guy who proposed charging wounded warriors' private insurance for their treatment of war wounds.

This is the guy who shirked a visit to Landstuhl when he found out there would be no publicity benefits available.

This is the guy who made a pro-forma visit to Walter Reed, making it more of a campaign style visit than showing actual care or compassion for the troops he commands.

THis is the guy cutting military spending while wasting heaps of money for frivlous programs designed to buy votes.

Our troops deserve better, but will have to suck it up and obey until he leaves office.

FInally, I wish a sincere "Happy Independence Day!" to all the troops and their families, and want to thank them all for their ardous service defending our freedom. I don't need a teleprompter to do it. And, I mean every word!
Considering his past behavior and words, I don't necessary believe the president really meant what he said here. But I am glad to see him going through the motions and saying the right words. As President and CINC he speaks for all of us--there are things that must be said for the sake of the country whether he personally feels it or not, and he's finally saying them. However, it's quite an exercise to imagine Bush saying that speech quoted here--it sounds EXACTLY like Bush (except for maybe something about "I am so lucky/proud to have the opportunity of being your commander in chief").
